About the Role:
Fanatics Betting & Gaming is seeking a Staff Java Software Engineer to help shape the architecture and technical direction of its Internal Platforms organization. These platforms support essential business functions across customer operations, marketing, support, risk, and data through Java backend services, APIs, event-driven systems, and integrations with third-party SaaS and CRM platforms. This is a senior individual contributor role for an engineer who can independently lead complex, cross-functional initiatives while remaining hands-on with development and code reviews. You'll own architecture for major services and integrations, establish engineering standards, mentor other engineers, and work closely with technical and business leaders to determine priorities and deliver reliable solutions. The role is remote and based in New York, NY, United States.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership and Architecture:
Own the architecture of major services, integrations, and data flows within Internal Platforms, from problem definition through production operation.
Lead complex, cross-functional design initiatives by evaluating trade-offs and aligning engineering teams and stakeholders.
Translate ambiguous business and technical challenges into clear plans and workstreams that other engineers can execute.
Evaluate technologies, design patterns, and vendors, balancing sophisticated solutions with simpler, practical approaches.
Establish and improve engineering standards for API design, testing, observability, deployment, and integrations.
Identify technical debt and reliability risks, build support for addressing them, and prioritize improvements alongside product delivery.
Hands-On Engineering:
Design, build, and maintain scalable, resilient, and well-tested Java backend services using Spring Boot or similar frameworks.
Resolve complex technical challenges involving high-throughput event processing, multi-system integrations, data integrity, and production incidents.
Investigate root causes and implement lasting fixes supported by better instrumentation.
Maintain high engineering standards through code contributions and constructive, technically focused code reviews.
Contribute to internal web applications and user interfaces backed by Java services when needed.
Mentorship and Engineering Development:
Mentor senior and mid-level engineers through design reviews, pairing, and direct feedback.
Help teammates develop independent technical judgment by delegating meaningful design responsibilities and supporting stretch assignments.
Onboard new engineers and help them understand platform systems, architecture, and conventions.
Maintain documentation, runbooks, and design records that support independent operation and future development.
Promote an inclusive, collaborative environment where different perspectives are welcomed and technical disagreements are resolved constructively.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Delivery:
- Partner with Product Managers, Technical Program Managers, and business stakeholders to shape roadmaps and address technical feasibility, sequencing, and risk early.
- Work with Marketing, Operations, Support, Risk, Compliance, and Data teams to deliver platform capabilities that meet business needs and regulatory obligations.
- Represent Internal Platforms in architecture discussions with other engineering teams and establish clear integration contracts and ownership boundaries.
- Communicate technical challenges, decisions, and trade-offs clearly to technical and non-technical audiences, including leadership.
- Drive delivery of assigned initiatives by managing scope, estimates, blockers, dependencies, and outcomes.
- Coordinate with external partners and vendors on integration design and technical escalations when required.
- Third-Party and SaaS Integrations
- Own integration architecture between Java services and third-party platforms, including REST APIs, platform events, and middleware.
- Define reusable integration patterns that support consistency and reduce unnecessary point-to-point connections.
- Lead resolution of complex issues involving backend services, vendor platforms, and data pipelines.
- Collaborate with platform specialists, including Salesforce-focused engineers, to maintain clear and sustainable integration boundaries.
Operational Excellence:
Own production health for services within your area, including service-level objectives (SLOs), alerting, on-call practices, incident response, and post-incident follow-up.
Anticipate failure scenarios, capacity constraints, and reliability risks, implementing safeguards before issues arise.
Improve CI/CD processes, test automation, release safety, and developer productivity.
Maintain the engineering standards required for a highly available, regulated gaming platform.
Required Qualifications:
8+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep expertise in Java.
Demonstrated ownership of architecture and delivery for complex production systems, including initiatives spanning multiple teams or business functions.
Strong experience designing APIs and integrating distributed systems, with sound judgment around consistency, failure handling, and service boundaries.
Ability to operate independently, define solutions for ambiguous problems, and drive implementations through production.
Experience mentoring engineers and improving team standards through design reviews, code reviews, and direct coaching.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts and trade-offs to varied audiences.
Experience with Git-based development workflows, code reviews, and CI/CD pipelines.
Experience operating production services, including on-call responsibilities and incident response.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with event-driven architectures such as Kafka at meaningful scale.
Experience working in cloud environments, preferably AWS, including infrastructure as code.
Experience with highly available or regulated systems in areas such as gaming, fintech, or payments.
Experience contributing to internal web applications or developer tools using Java-backed web frameworks or frontend frameworks such as React and Angular.
Experience working with AI model or agent platforms and integrating AI agents into production workflows. Familiarity with Anthropic, OpenAI, Amazon Bedrock, LangChain, Google Vertex AI, Microsoft Copilot Studio, CrewAI, or AutoGen is a plus.
Proficiency with AI-powered coding assistants to design, build, and test functionality while maintaining code quality and test coverage, along with an interest in helping the broader team adopt these tools effectively.
Nice to Have:
Exposure to Salesforce as an integration platform, including Salesforce APIs, platform events, or development with Apex, Lightning Web Components, or Flows.
Salesforce Administrator or Developer certifications.
Salesforce expertise is not required. The primary focus is strong Java engineering, distributed systems, and integration design.
What We Value:
A commitment to building high-quality internal platforms that deliver measurable business value.
A strong sense of ownership and accountability for outcomes beyond individual code contributions.
A solutions-first mindset, with the ability to anticipate challenges and propose practical options.
A genuine interest in mentoring colleagues and helping other engineers grow.
The ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment with incomplete information.
