Be part of a team that prides itself in making a difference for Californians.What will be the difference that you make for California?Cal/OSHA is seeking a Senior Safety Engineer (Industrial) (SSE) to join the team at the Cal/OSHA Calibration and Inventory Control Lab (CALICO).Under the direction of the Principal Safety Engineer (Industrial) of the Research and Standards Health Unit, the SSE in a laboratory setting serves as a technical lead for the DOSH program and the CALICO Laboratory Unit, and is responsible for establishing, implementing and maintaining policies and procedures for selecting, maintaining, and using scientific measurement and personal protective equipment (hereafter referred to as “equipment”) applicable to the safety and health orders of DOSH; and selecting and using third-party analytical laboratory, engineering testing, and technical reference services (hereafter referred to as “services”). The San Leandro building has ample free parking and is in an industrial complex. The work will primarily occur indoors in a mixed office/laboratory environment (cubicles, small offices, laboratory and equipment storage areas). The work will involve typical office tools such as computers, telephones, printers, scanners, staplers, and filing apparatus. It will also involve many forms of technical measurement and protective equipment in a laboratory setting. The work will involve exposure to typical office noise, low levels of calibration chemicals and chemical residuals on used equipment, extensive time spent in a stationary position, and with repetitive movement involving personal computers, telephones, and other equipment. The work will involve frequent interaction with coworkers. The work will sometimes require travel elsewhere in the state to training facilities and other workplaces (e.g. healthcare, manufacturing, or construction job sites) as part of a DOSH field visit, scientific studies, and field trials. Field work could involve significantly different conditions than described above, including exposure to hazards such as outdoor conditions in inclement weather, uneven terrain, heights, moving equipment, and biological, chemical or physical agents.Required travel would occur via private vehicle, state vehicle, or public transportation (i.e. automobile, airplane, etc.) and could include overnight travel within California.After the move to Oakland: * The building will be in downtown Oakland, approximately two blocks from the 12th Street Oakland City Center BART station. State transit subsidies include BART and other public transit systems. * The building will be located three blocks from Highway 980. * The Oakland City Center area has many inexpensive places to explore for lunch.
