You will work collaboratively with environmental, engineering, energy management, and site organizations to reduce environmental impact, support regulatory compliance, and promote effective sustainability initiatives across the WIPP community.Key ResponsibilitiesSupport continued implementation and maintenance of the WIPP Environmental Management SystemWork to expand WIPP recycling programs and support waste minimization initiativesCoordinate with WIPP organizations to track completion status for EMS targetsProvide guidance to facility organizations on developing EMS annual targetsConduct Environmental Management System Steering Committee meetings as needed to discuss target progress and EMS-related topicsCoordinate with the Engineering Department’s Energy Manager for compilation and submittal of the Energy and Water Management PlanSupport sustainability initiatives related to DOE sustainability goals, including energy and water conservation, waste minimization, recycling, sustainable procurement, carbon pollution-free electricity, and site resiliencePrepare clear, organized reports and documentation that communicate project status, identify issues, and present solutionsAnnually summarize EMS activities for compliance reports submitted to federal and state regulatorsPrepare the EMS annual report and contribute to the Waste Minimization ReportSupport planning and coordination of WIPP Earth Day events and activitiesEducate the WIPP site community on EMS, Sustainability, and Pollution Prevention programsSupport NEPA environmental compliance reviews for planned engineering design and construction projectsInform the SIMCO Program Manager of EMS progress and status on an annual basisSupport regulatory compliance with applicable federal and New Mexico environmental regulationsRequired QualificationsBachelor of Science degree in Science, Engineering, or an equivalent area3–5 years of combined experience supporting and implementing EMS, P2, Sustainability, and/or NEPA programsKnowledge of environmental laws and regulationsEffective verbal and written communication skillsAbility to write clear, organized reports and technical documentsStrong attention to detail and demonstrated initiativeAbility to work independently as well as collaboratively with individuals and project groupsProficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPointAbility to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with various site-wide departments and organizationsPreferred BackgroundExperience working with sustainability or environmental programs in a government facilityPrevious WIPP, DOE, federal facility, or highly regulated environmental compliance experiencePrevious HAZWOPER and/or MSHA trainingExperience supporting recycling, waste minimization, energy and water conservation, sustainable procurement, or site resilience initiativesExperience preparing environmental compliance reports or supporting regulatory submittalsExperience supporting NEPA reviews for engineering design or construction projectsWork Environment100% onsite position supporting the WIPP facility near Carlsbad, New MexicoThe WIPP facility is approximately a 45-minute commute from Carlsbad and about a 1-hour commute from Hobbs, New MexicoShuttle commuter service to and from the WIPP site is offered from both Carlsbad and HobbsWork is performed within a DOE environmental compliance settingRole requires collaboration with site organizations, environmental staff, engineering personnel, energy management, and program stakeholdersWhy This RoleThis is a strong opportunity for an environmental professional who wants to support sustainability, environmental compliance, and pollution prevention programs at a nationally significant DOE facility.
