Day Camp Counselor

DescriptionJOB SUMMARYUnder the direction and supervision of the Day Camp Coordinator and the School Age Program Manager; this position is responsible for planning, organizing, leading, participating in, supervising and implementing day camp programs.EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & TRAININGHigh school graduate. Preference will be given to candidates with a bachelor's degree in education, youth services, recreation, or working toward a degree in these areas.Experience in leading youth activities. Preference will be given to those with day camp experienceA valid driver's license is required if assigned to operate a Bolingbrook Park District vehicle for mini trips.CPR and First aid certifiedKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIESThe ability to plan, organize and lead day camp activities.Ability to tactfully discuss camper's behaviors with campers and parents as needed.An understanding of the principles of customer service and how they relate to campers and parentsExcellent communication skillsOrganizational skillsAbility to control campersDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESSupervise Camp activities. Supervision includes watching, monitoring and controlling camper's behavior and interactions.Conduct camp activities including all field trips. Implement planned activities as well as evaluating age-appropriate activities.Teach sport specific skills (e. g. instruct on how to hit a golf ball, how to throw a Frisbee, etc.)Demonstrate and facilitate production of craft projects.Collect and store camper's belongings in assigned areas.Officiate various sport games.Communicate with School Age Program Manager, Day Camp Coordinator, Group Leader and other staff members and parents.Communication includes participating in all training of camp counselors, and weekly camp meeting and voicing opinions and ideas.Conduct oneself as a leader and role model for campers.Uphold Bolingbrook Park District policies and procedures.Provide and maintain a safe environment.Serve in a professional and courteous manner with the highest regard to the customer.Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or assigned by Day Camp Coordinator.Abide by the Bolingbrook Park District dress code for your area.Perform all job tasks within the rules and guidelines of the Park District's safety program.Work as a team player with co-workers and in conjunction with other departmentsPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSSeeing: To observe campersWalking: To supervise campers and leading activitiesSitting: To supervise campers and leading activitiesLifting: To move equipment and supplies and to set-up and take down for camp activitiesReaching: To move supplies and equipment and to put them awayPulling: To move supplies and equipment and to put them awayPushing: To move supplies and equipment and to put them awayCrouching: To lead activities, picking up supplies or garbage, and looking under equipmentWriting: To complete required reports, lesson plans, and communicate with supervisorCOGNITIVE CONSIDERATIONSMust have the ability to plan, organize, lead, delegate, and evaluate camp activitiesMust have the ability to relate to others in a professional mannerFSLAThis is a part time hourly, non-exempt positionHOURSDay Camp operates Monday - Friday and includes sunrise and sunset hours.Hours to be set by the Day Camp Coordinator and/or School Age Program Manager and may vary from week to week.
