General DiffUSE Job Application
About DiffUSEDiffUSE is a project at the Astera Institute building open infrastructure for studying protein dynamics directly from experimental data. We work at the interface of structural biology (crystallography, cryo-EM), modern machine learning, computational biophysics, and open scientific tooling. Our team spans computational biologists, ML researchers, software engineers, and program staff, collaborating across Astera, Radial, and partner institutions. We are growing, and we want to hear from people who would be excited to join us, even if we have not yet posted the specific role that fits you.Submit your CV and one paragraph telling us what you can contribute to diffUSEWe review submissions on a rolling basisIf there is a fit now or in the near future, we will reach outWe will only respond if we are interested in exploring furtherRole categories We're Actively Building AroundComputational and data scienceDiffraction data processing and structural data pipelinesMulticonformer and heterogeneity analysis from large datasetsData standards work (mmCIF and related)Macromolecular ensemble metricsMachine learning research for macromolecules and biophysicsRepresentation learning for protein dynamicsML on raw experimental data rather than processed structures3D vision and geometric deep learning backgrounds especially welcomeDataset generation and open releaseDesigning and running campaigns to generate large structural datasetsPartnering with external collaborators to open and standardize existing datasetsBridging experimental facilities, data producers, and the open-science communitySoftware and infrastructure engineeringScientific data infrastructure, pipelines, and toolingOpen-source release engineering, reproducibility, and developer experienceProgram and operationsProgram management, scientific coordination, communicationsOpen-science publishing and community buildingWhat We Look For Across All RolesFamiliarity with protein biophysics and the experimental methods that generate structural dataHigh agency: you identify what needs doing and move it forward without waiting for directionAbility to drive projects and people, including collaborators outside your reporting lineComfortable owning a problem end-to-end and unblocking collaboratorsStrong commitment to open science and public-good infrastructureComfort working at the boundary between disciplinesBias toward shipping, iteration, and rapid feedbackClear written and verbal communicationTrack record of independent work inside collaborative teamsLogisticsLocation: in-person at Astera in Emeryville, CaliforniaAstera is a 501(c)(3) private operating foundationThis is not an application to a specific posted role; we will reach out only if there is a fitTo applySend your CVInclude one short paragraph: which role category, and why DiffUSE specificallyCompensation Range: $100K - $300K
