Controller
POSITION SUMMARY
The Controller will oversee all accounting functions, supervise accounting staff, and provide financial leadership for multiple related companies. This role requires a hands-on leader who is equally comfortable managing day-to-day accounting activities while developing financial reporting, budgets, cash flow analysis, and operational improvements.
The ideal candidate is organized, analytical, proactive, and enjoys improving processes while supporting a growing business.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Management
Oversee all accounting functions for three related companies
Ensure accurate monthly financial statements
Manage month-end and year-end close
Maintain the general ledger and chart of accountsReview journal entries and account reconciliations
Monitor internal controls and accounting procedures
Coordinate with outside CPA firm for annual tax preparation
Accounting Operations
Supervise accounts payable and accounts receivable
Assist with client invoicing and progress billing
Review vendor invoices and payment processing
Oversee bank and credit card reconciliations
Manage cash receipts and deposits
Ensure accurate coding of expenses and job costs
Oversee sales tax reporting
Coordinate annual 1099 preparation and filing
Construction & Project Accounting
Review Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting
Analyze project profitability
Monitor job cost reporting
Review Buildertrend and QuickBooks financial data
Assist with project close-outs
Analyze budget versus actual costs
Improve project accounting procedures
Assist operations with financial reporting and forecasting
Financial Planning & Analysis
Prepare monthly financial reporting packages
Perform cash flow forecasting
Monitor company liquidity
Develop budgets and financial projections
Analyze key financial metrics
Identify opportunities to improve profitability
Support ownership with strategic financial decisions
Leadership
Manage and mentor accounting staff
Conduct regular one-on-one meetings
Assist with hiring and training accounting personnel
Establish accounting procedures and workflows
Foster a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
Collaborate with project managers and department leaders
Systems & Process Improvement
Maintain QuickBooks Online and Buildertrend accounting workflows
Evaluate and improve accounting systems
Develop written accounting procedures
Improve efficiency through automation and standardization
Ensure financial data integrity across all companies
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
Minimum 5 years of progressive accounting experience
Previous Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager experience
Strong knowledge of QuickBooks Online
Experience with construction accounting
Strong understanding of GAAP
Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
Excellent organizational and analytical skills
Strong communication and leadership abilities
Preferred
CPA or CPA candidate
Experience with Buildertrend
Experience with Design Manager
Experience in residential construction
Experience with interior design accounting
Experience managing multiple entities
