Louisiana School for the Deaf – the Louisiana Special Schools are seeking a full-time American Sign Language Interpreter. Must be willing to work flexible shifts, travel, after-school, night and weekend work may be required.Interpreters will provide equal access between Deaf and hearing individuals using American Sign Language. The employee must perform assigned duties without significant risk of harm to their own safety or that of others.Professional ResponsibilitiesComply with school system policies, philosophy and programs.Exhibit knowledge of special education rules, regulations, state and federal laws.Understand the needs of special-needs children, especially Deaf and hard-of-hearing students.Demonstrate knowledge of child growth and development.Maintain professional relationships with students, community, state and local agencies.Demonstrate effective office-management skills such as planning, organizing and implementing.Programmatic ResponsibilitiesMaintain certification according to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and Louisiana Department of Education guidelines.Advocate for the needs of Deaf and hard-of-hearing learners.Provide equal access for meetings involving staff and/ltd students.Deliver interpreting services in various settings assigned by coordinating staff (staff meetings, IEP meetings, student evaluations, staff training).Maintain an interpreter role in all assignments and utilize effective interpreting techniques.Monitor and adjust communication to fit the needs of the consumers.Preserve the content and spirit of the speaker in all assignments and respond without interjecting personal opinions.Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor only when they do not conflict with primary interpreting responsibilities.Recognize and follow established communication channels for concerns.Attend professional development training directed by the supervisor.Establish annual professional growth goals and self-evaluation.Provide mentoring assistance to interpreting interns.Assist the Interpreting Coordinator with various duties as assigned.Professional ConductReport child abuse as mandated by SSD policies.Maintain appropriate boundaries with staff, students and clients.Adhere to RID CPC, Federal, State, and DOE/SSD/LSDVI policies.Respect the dignity and worth of each student.Maintain confidentiality of assignment information, sharing only on a need-to-know basis.Exercise ethical decision-making per RID professional code of conduct.Accept and use suggestions for improvement.Exhibit initiative and follow established communication channels.Support teamwork outlined by RID standards.Use time effectively and demonstrate reliability and punctuality.Support school programs and display a positive attitude per RID code of professional conduct.QualificationsPossession of a Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certificate of Interpreting (CI), Certificate of Translating (CT), or National Interpreter Certificate (NIC).Bachelor's degree and at least 2 years of full-time paid certified interpreting experience in a variety of settings.Within 30 days of appointment, possess an education ancillary certificate issued by LDOE or an ancillary grandfathered certificate.Within six months of appointment, achieve an Advanced Plus Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) rating and a Superior rating within the first two years of employment; Superior is the minimum acceptable SPLI level for effective performance.Good human-relations skills.Must become an LSDVI approved driver.Equal Employment Opportunity – The Louisiana Special Schools do not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, disability, or age.
