This role owns critical backend services that handle sensitive financial data, where reliability, security, and performance are essential.What You'll DoBackend EngineeringDesign, build, and maintain backend services that power Monstro’s consumer experienceWork across our stack (Python, Node.js, and Go), selecting the right tool for each problemBuild robust APIs serving mobile and web clients while integrating with financial institutions and third-party servicesSystem Architecture & ScalabilityArchitect systems that scale gracefully as our user base growsIdentify bottlenecks and implement caching strategies (Redis, CDN, application-level caching)Optimize query performance and tune container-based applicationsDesign for resilience with failover strategies, retry logic, and graceful degradationInfrastructure & DevOpsContainerize and orchestrate services using Docker and KubernetesCollaborate with platform teams on infrastructure decisionsContribute to CI/CD pipelines and ensure smooth, reliable deploymentsUnderstand and work across the full SDLC, from local development through production observabilityData & IntegrationsWork with relational and NoSQL databases, partnering with data engineers on schema and data modelsBuild integrations with banking systems, payment processors, and financial data providersImplement event-driven architectures and message queues where appropriateSecurity, Quality & Team CollaborationBuild systems with security as a first-class concern, including authentication, authorization, encryption, and audit loggingEnsure systems meet fintech regulatory and compliance requirementsGuide and develop junior and mid-level engineers through code reviews, pairing sessions, and technical coachingPartner closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver cohesive featuresParticipate in architectural discussions and incident response, contributing to a culture of continuous learning and technical excellenceWhat Success Looks LikeBackend systems reliably support a growing consumer user base with minimal incidents or regressionsSensitive financial data is handled securely, correctly, and in compliance with regulatory requirementsAPIs and services are well-designed, performant, and easy for mobile and web clients to consumeInfrastructure and deployment processes enable safe, frequent releasesJunior and mid-level engineers are unblocked, supported, and improving through mentorship and collaborationWhat We’re Looking For7+ years of professional software engineering experienceStrong proficiency in at least two of the following: Python, Node.js, GoHands-on experience with Docker and Kubernetes in production environmentsSolid understanding of the full SDLC and modern development toolchainsExperience scaling and performance-tuning container-based applicationsStrong understanding of caching patterns and strategiesFamiliarity with API design, microservices patterns, and distributed systemsExperience with test-driven development and test automationFamiliarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or AzureClear communicator who takes ownership, moves with urgency, and is passionate about building high-quality softwareWhy Monstro?Ownership & Impact: Shape the future of AI-powered finance—building a category-defining product used by consumers and institutions around the world.Elite Team: Join a team with leadership that has a track record of scaling companies from early stage to major exits.Principles-Driven Culture: Work in a culture that values speed, ownership, and impact—what most companies achieve in 90 days, we do in 45.Comprehensive Compensation Package: Competitive salary, equity, and robust benefits package, including paid health, vision, dental, and disability coverage.Note: This role will be hybrid in office for those in the NYC metro or remote for those in the Denver metro area (but with the expectation of periodic travel to our NYC office)Base Compensation Range (New York City): $164,000 - $206,000Base Compensation Range (Denver Metro): $145,000 - $181,000The posted range reflects the base salary for this role across the market ranges for each location.
