Field Archaeologist & Crew Lead

Position Summary:
Responsible for managing small field crews and conducting archaeological fieldwork, monitoring, and research associated with archaeological projects. Responsible for crew safety, maintaining project documents, leading crews in the field, assisting with scheduling fieldwork logistics, and assisting with archaeological reporting at the direction of the Section Head or Senior Archaeologist and Principal Investigator.?
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Leads team through project field work to effectively execute project tasks
Leads Phase I archaeological field work to locate and identify sites
Conducts archaeological monitoring during construction projects or pre-construction
Collects data and field samples during archaeological investigations
Analyzes historic and pre-historic artifacts
Takes daily notes of field progress
Schedule fieldwork based on project schedule
Instructs field crews on how to use equipment, technology and field methods, as required
Assists in writing sections of archaeological reports and/or prepare archaeological site forms
Perform site mapping tasks as needed
Maintain/repair field gear as needed
Document completed field efforts in standardized format
Lead and manage field team members by providing leadership and continuous performance management (setting expectations, goals, feedback, 1:1 meeting, coaching) that supports the growth and development of team.
Required Skills:
Candidates should be flexible to changing work schedules, have good organizational skills, communication skills, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new tasks and travel
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Word and Excel
Must successfully complete and pass Motor Vehicle screening
Required Experience:
3+ years’ experience in archaeology role
Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or related field
Completion of an accredited archaeological field school
Experience in CRM-based Phase I/II/III archaeological survey and/or excavation
Preferred Experience
1+ years’ experience leading archaeological field work to locate and identify sites?
Experience with GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection
Knowledge of historic/prehistoric material culture and artifact processing
Ability to navigate using compass and USGS topographic map
Ability to set up and run a Total Station independently for site recording/mapping
Archaeological reporting experience.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in the field 75% of the time
Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs. as needed
Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions
Perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures)
Office work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment?
After an initial training period, a hybrid work schedule is available for office work.
MUST HAVE:
3+ years’ experience in archaeology role.
Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or related field.
Completion of an accredited archaeological field school.
Experience in CRM-based Phase I/II/III archaeological survey and/or excavation.
