AI/Machine Learning Engineer

REMOTE FROM PORTUGAL - NON-NEGOTIABLERole Overview:We are looking for a Junior to Mid-Level AI/Machine Learning Engineer with 1-4 years of professional experience to support our senior AI engineer in building and improving AI-powered products.You will work on practical machine learning problems involving document and email processing, NLP, large language models, model training and fine-tuning, AI agents, and inference performance. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys experimenting, comparing different approaches, and turning promising ideas into reliable product features.Key Responsibilities:Prepare datasets and build training, fine-tuning, and evaluation pipelines.Train, fine-tune, test, and improve NLP and language models.Work with transformer models, embeddings, classification, information extraction, and document-processing systems.Build proofs of concept and evaluate multiple approaches to difficult AI problems.Experiment with AI agents, tool-calling workflows, and agent loops.Measure and improve model quality, agent reliability, latency, and cost.Investigate model behaviour, evaluation results, and training issues.Integrate models and AI pipelines into production services.Collaborate with the senior AI engineer and software engineering team.Contribute to technical documentation and communicate findings clearly.Occasionally interact with customers to understand real-world problems and improve the product.Must-Have Qualifications:1-4 years of professional experience in AI, machine learning, NLP, or a closely related engineering role.Strong Python skills and experience writing maintainable, testable code.Practical experience with PyTorch, Hugging Face Transformers, or similar machine learning frameworks.Understanding of model training, fine-tuning, validation, and evaluation.Hands-on experience with at least one of the following: - NLP or transformer-based models - LLM applications - Information extraction or document classification - Embeddings, semantic search, or retrieval - AI agents or tool-calling systemsAbility to design experiments, compare results, and identify why an approach is or is not working.Experience with Git, debugging, testing, and basic Docker workflows.Strong analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.Fluent in English; Dutch is a plus.Nice to Have:Experience with LLM fine-tuning, including LoRA, QLoRA, PEFT, or supervised fine-tuning.Experience building evaluation datasets, benchmarks, regression tests, or LLM-as-judge workflows.Experience improving inference latency, throughput, reliability, or cost.Familiarity with RAG, vector search, reranking, or hybrid search.Experience with agent frameworks such as LangGraph or comparable orchestration tools.Familiarity with experiment tracking or observability tools such as MLflow, Weights & Biases, or Langfuse.Experience deploying models through APIs or cloud services.Familiarity with FastAPI, PostgreSQL, or Elasticsearch.Open-source contributions, relevant side projects, research, or active participation in the AI/ML community.Previous experience working in a product, consulting, or client-facing environment.What We’re Looking For:You enjoy solving difficult and ambiguous problems.You are comfortable moving between experiments, model debugging, and production engineering.You can recognise when a training run or evaluation approach is unlikely to succeed.You like getting your work into the hands of real users.You are curious about current developments in LLMs, agents, and applied machine learning.You communicate clearly, document your work, and learn quickly.You are comfortable debugging a model or tensor in the morning and working on production services in the afternoon.Contract Details:Contract Type: PermanentWork Mode: 100% remote from PortugalTimezone: Central European Time (CET)Salary Range: €1,500–€2,500 gross per month + benefitsStart Date: Immediate
