Basic FunctionCare for animals impounded at the Animal Control Shelter.SALARY: 5AREPORTS TO: Animal Shelter Operations SupervisorPOSITIONS SUPERVISED: NoneTypical Duties Clean and disinfect kennels and feed the animals according to established schedules and procedures. Evaluate animals for health and temperament, tend to minor injuries, and administer prescribed medications. Report any animal needing veterinary care to the Animal Shelter Operations Supervisor. Show animals that are available for adoption to prospective new owners. Advise them on animal behavior, training, and breed characteristics. Assist with performing euthanasia. Perform paperwork associated with shelter animals. Operate crematory to dispose of animal carcasses, clean out and dispose of ashes. Receive and book in animals from the public. May coordinate training and activities for volunteers and other off-site events. Perform janitorial tasks and groundskeeping, including minor maintenance and snow removal. May answer phone calls regarding policies, lost and found animals, animal availability, and other office duties.Position RequirementsMinimum Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. One year of demonstrated experience in providing care and proper handling of dogs, and/or cats. Experience with small mammals, exotics, livestock, and other types of domestic animals preferred. Veterinary Technician certification preferred. Six months experience with direct public contact. Basic knowledge of personal computers; type with speed and accuracy. Must be able to work weekends and holidays. PREFERRED: Ability to have and maintain a valid driver’s license and to meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough’s insurance program. If personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of insurance at statutory limits must be provided. (A CURRENT COPY OF DRIVING RECORD WILL BE REQUIRED UPON REQUEST.)Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Ability to deal with the public in a sensitive manner under stressful situations. Ability to handle, in a humane manner, various animal temperaments. Ability to wear a respirator and pass a medical physical.al.Other A test on breed identification may be required at time of interview. Successful applicant may be required to take a series of rabies prophylaxis vaccinations and an annual hearing test.
