Embedded Systems EngineerJob Title: Embedded Systems EngineerCompany: HyperKelpLocation: San Diego, CA (hybrid with field testing)OverviewHyperKelp builds low-cost, long-endurance ocean sensing platforms that operate in contested and remote environments. The Kelp Smart Buoy (KSB) is a modular, solar-powered system supporting ISR, environmental monitoring, and defense applications.This role focuses on designing, building, and deploying embedded systems that power persistent maritime sensing at the edge.ResponsibilitiesDesign and develop embedded firmware for KSB platforms (MCUs, sensor interfaces, power systems)Integrate and optimize sensors (acoustic, RF, EO/IR, environmental)Implement low-power architectures for long-duration deploymentsDevelop communication interfaces (LoRa, SATCOM, cellular, WiFi)Support edge processing and AI/ML deployment on constrained hardwareWork closely with mechanical and software engineers on hardware integrationDebug and validate systems in lab and real-world maritime environmentsSupport rapid prototyping, iteration, and field deploymentsContribute to system architecture and product roadmap decisionsRequired QualificationsBS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field3+ years of embedded systems experienceStrong C/C++ firmware development skillsFamiliarity with hardware interfaces (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN)Understanding of power management and low-power designExperience with embedded Linux is a plusPreferred QualificationsExperience with maritime, aerospace, or ruggedized systemsFamiliarity with RF systems or software-defined radioExperience deploying edge AI/ML modelsExperience with satellite or long-range communicationsExposure to defense or dual-use technologiesAbility to work across hardware, firmware, and systemsWhat You’ll Work OnPersistent ocean sensing platforms operating for months to yearsDistributed sensor networks supporting maritime domain awarenessEdge AI systems for real-time classification and alertingCompensation & BenefitsCompetitive salary, equity and benefits.Opportunity to work on high-impact national security applicationsSmall, high-ownership team with rapid iteration cyclesAccess to advanced prototyping and testing facilities*Due to the nature of our work with defense-related technologies, this role may involve access to export-controlled information and is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations.
