This role focuses on establishing safe, compliant, and cost-effective approaches for handling, processing, storing and disposing of waste materials resulting from molten salt reactor operations.Other Responsibilities IncludeLead development and implementation of nuclear waste management strategies specific to molten salt reactor byproducts, including salt waste streams and activated materialsEvaluate and select optimal nuclear waste encapsulation technologies and materials for long-term stabilityEstablish vendor relationships with nuclear waste form suppliers and encapsulation technology providersDesign nuclear waste treatment protocols that meet regulatory requirements while minimizing volume and costPlan and establish the characterization of nuclear waste streams to determine appropriate handling and disposal pathwaysEnsure all nuclear waste management activities comply with NRC regulations (10 CFR Part 20, 10 CFR Part 61) and DOE ordersCoordinate with regulatory agencies on nuclear waste classification, storage authorization, disposal authorization, and compliance reportingConduct life-cycle cost analyses for different nuclear waste management approachesLead research initiatives to develop innovative waste treatment methods specific to molten salt systemsProvide technical guidance on decontamination and decommissioning planningPresent test results, assumptions, risks, and constraints to the R&D Director and propose paths forwardCollaborating with the TEI Engineering to support design developmentCore CompetenciesDeep understanding of radioactive waste classification systems (Class A, B, C, GTCC)Knowledge of waste encapsulation matrices including cement, glass, ceramics, and metal alloysFamiliarity with molten salt chemistry and fluoride salt waste characteristics is highly desirableUnderstanding of radionuclide behavior, decay chains, and long-term waste form performanceCritical thinking and decision-makingResults-oriented with strong execution focusTeam collaboration across multidisciplinary groupsAdaptability and flexibility in dynamic R&D environmentsClear and effective communication at all organizational levelsAbility to collaborate and interact with other groupsFlexible and adaptable to changeRequirementsBachelor's degree or higher in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Health Physics, or related technical field requiredMinimum 5 years of experience in nuclear waste managementThorough knowledge of NRC nuclear waste management regulations and licensing requirementsExperience with nuclear waste characterization, manifest preparation, and transportation requirements (DOT regulations)Experience with DOE nuclear waste management programs or national laboratory collaborationsUnderstanding of ALARA principles and radiation protection standardsTrack record of successful project management in nuclear or hazardous waste environmentsStrong analytical skills for evaluating competing waste management technologiesClear technical writing skills for regulatory submissions and proceduresAbility to communicate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholdersProblem-solving mindset with focus on practical, cost-effective solutionsAssetsProfessional Engineer (PE) license or Certified Health Physicist (CHP) certificationExperience with advanced reactor technologies or non-light water reactor systemsBackground in radiochemistry or materials scienceKnowledge of international waste management regulations, practices and standards (e.g., IAEA, UK, Canada, France)Demonstrated experience working with nuclear waste disposal facilities and third-party vendorsPrior involvement in facility decommissioning projectsExperience in nuclear licensing or regulatory complianceBenefitsExtended Healthcare Plan (Medical, Disability, Dental & Vision), + an additional Health Spending AccountA vacation policy designed to support your work-life balanceEAP Programs available to you and your family Wellness Subsidy Annual Performance ReviewPlease submit a Resume and Cover Letter.Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for sponsorship for employment visa status.Terrestrial Energy Requires That The Successful Candidate Be Able To Access And Use Information Subject To U.S. Export Control Laws, Which Mandate All Citizenships (including Dual Citizenships) Be From The U.S. Department Of Energy’s List Of Generally Authorized Countries (10 CFR Part 810 Appendix A And Can Be Found Herehttps://www.ecfr.gov/current/title-10/chapter-III/part-810/appendix-Appendix%20A%20to%20Part%20810) unless a specific authorization from the U.S. Department of Energy is obtained or unless you are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, U.S. permanent resident, or protected individual under the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Act (8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)).
