Job DescriptionJob Title: Elementary TeacherContract Length: 190 contract daysFLSA Status: ExemptJob SummaryThe position is responsible for creating a classroom environment to develop competencies in the assigned grade level and an understanding of its structure; to motivate each pupil to apply the grade level's knowledge, experience, and skills; and to prepare each student to meet the Virginia SOL standards.Essential DutiesPrepares course objectives and outline for the course of study, following curriculum guidelines or requirements of the state and school.Lectures, demonstrates, and uses audiovisual teaching aids to present subject matter to the class.Prepares, administers, and corrects tests and records results.Teaches rules of conduct.Maintains order in the classroom and on the playground.Counsels pupils when adjustment and academic problems arise.Discupupils' academic and behavioral attitudes and achievements with parents.Keeps attendance and grade records as required by the school.Coordinates class field trips.Works cooperatively with the total staff.Assumes responsibility for the care of materials, equipment, and facilities.Assumes responsibility for a neat, orderly environment for students committed to their care.Practices and promotes positive interactions among students.Encourages self-direction and self-motivation in students.Demonstrates knowledge of the subject being taught.Exhibits evidence of effective lesson plans.Utilizes a variety of appropriate materials and resources.Job SpecificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must satisfactorily perform each essential duty. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities, who are otherwise qualified, to perform the essential functions.Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required)Must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in education or a related field.Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach in the assigned area.Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.Working Conditions & Physical RequirementsMust have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in regular classrooms, outdoors, and on thephonee; physical agility to lift to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
