Waste Handling Technician

Waste Handler We are seeking a dependable and self-motivated Waste Handler to join a chemical manufacturing facility in Des Moines, Iowa. This role plays a critical part in maintaining safe and compliant operations by processing chemical waste drums throughout the plant. The position is physically demanding, highly independent, and requires strict attention to safety, detail, and procedures.Responsibilities Collect, clean, and process drums that previously contained chemical materials.Process approximately 130 drums per day, including scraping and dumping chemical waste, rinsing drums with solvent and water, crushing drums, and placing crushed drums onto an elevator for disposal.Repetitively lift and handle drums weighing 2550 lbs.Operate a forklift approximately 50% of the time to move pallets of drums throughout the plant.Accurately label containers and materials as required.Follow daily work orders and established safety procedures.Properly wear required PPE at all times when handling chemicals.Essential Skills Forklift operation (50% of the role).Ability to meet daily processing expectations (130 drums/day).Ability to follow work orders and safety procedures.Accurate labeling and documentation.Additional Skills & Qualifications Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.High level of attention to detail quality and safety over speed.Strong reliability and work ethic.Physically capable of repetitive lifting (2550 lbs).Motivated, disciplined, and comfortable in a demanding environment.Manufacturing experience with 2-4 years preferred.Required to lift or move up to 50 pounds.1 year of forklift operating and recent experience.High School Diploma or GED.Why Work Here? The environment is a manufacturing/chemical plant with strong solvent odors, making it a dirty, odorous, and physically demanding space. This hands-on role requires comfort working around chemical waste. The dress code includes uniforms, steel-toed boots, hair nets, and extensive PPE such as rubber aprons.
