Electrical Utility Distribution Designer, OH and/or UG
Location: San Diego, CAType: HybridOverviewEngineering Partners (EPI) is a well-known engineering company in San Diego with utility, municipality, and government contracts focusing on electrical and power engineering.We are currently looking for an experienced Utility Designer with working knowledge of utility design/engineering, construction and project management processes requirements.Responsibilities• Prepare detailed technical designs (low to high complexity) for additions and modifications to utility electric facilities from project initiation through completion• Develop construction orders with safe, reliable, and cost-effective designs in compliance with utility standards, safety orders, and government regulations• Collaborate with project team members and escalate to senior designers or supervisors as needed for guidance• Coordinate with project managers, utility engineering, construction, and project management teams to deliver complete designs, including labor and material inputs into costing systems• Manage and/or support multiple concurrent projects, assignments, and activities• Coordinate with utilities to gather required data (civil, architectural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing plans)• Perform field walks, site visits, and structure inventories to assess feasibility and identify conflicts with existing facilities• Partner with utility engineering teams on load connections, system reliability, sectionalizing, and protection coordination• Coordinate with utility construction teams for facility verification and constructability considerations• Create utility designs using AutoCAD• Coordinate with SDG&E planners, designers, and clients throughout the project lifecycle• Design both overhead and underground electric distribution systems• Support projects including distribution reliability (switch/cable replacements), compliance work, backbone projects, and overhead-to-underground conversions• Perform engineering calculations (e.g., voltage drop, flicker, pulling tension)• Utilize pole loading and design tools such as O-Calc and PLS-CADD Lite• Maintain organized project documentation and track progress against deadlines• Communicate schedule impacts and delays clearly to stakeholders• Ensure compliance with municipal permitting requirements• Coordinate traffic control for projects involving major roadwork• Submit environmental and land services requests (e.g., easements, prior rights research)• Identify long-lead materials and communicate risks to project leadershipRequirements• Minimum 2 years of utility design experience• For Designer II & III: SDG&E Overhead or Underground qualification required• For Designer IV: SDG&E Overhead and Underground qualification required• Working knowledge of utility design, engineering, construction, and project management processes• Familiarity with SDG&E Construction Standards, Service Standards, Design Manual, and Electric Standard Practices• General knowledge of California Public Utilities Commission General Orders 95, 128, and 165• Working knowledge of electrical theory• Ability to read and interpret civil, electrical, mechanical, and landscape drawings• Strong problem-solving, mathematical, and written communication skills• Experience with AutoCAD and GIS systems• Ability to manage priorities, meet deadlines, and communicate effectivelyPreferred Qualifications• Associate’s (AA) or Bachelor’s (BS) degree in a related field• Experience with SAP, iCUE, or other utility work management systems• Experience with PLS-CADD or PLS-CADD Lite• Broader experience across both overhead and underground distribution design (especially for progression into higher-level roles)Compensation Anticipated Base Salary Range: $30 - $52 per hourActual compensation within this range will be determined based on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s experience, skills, qualifications, internal equity, and prevailing market conditions.Benefits401(k) matchingMedical, Dental, and Vision InsuranceEmployee assistance programFlexible spending accountPaid time offDiscretionary Bonus IncentivesWhy This Is a Great OpportunityBlend of analytical and operational exposureDirect impact on strategic programsCompetitive compensation and benefitsChallenging and engaging work, with opportunities to work on multiple programs/projectsAbility to create and implement change as needed with support from managementThe Engineering Partners, Inc. is an equal opportunity employer.
