Position Summary: The Operations Supervisor – The Operations Supervisor is a leadership position responsible for overseeing the daily deployment, supervision, and performance of The 6th Branch’s Operations Technicians and workforce development staff. This role serves as a critical link between Program Coordinators and field staff, ensuring work plans are executed efficiently, safely, and in alignment with organizational standards. The Operations Supervisor leads crews of 3–8 staff members across landscaping, public space cleaning, community farming, urban canopy care, and special projects. This position is highly hands-on and field-oriented, and it requires strong administrative skills, attention to detail, and experience supporting HR processes, including onboarding, timekeeping, performance management, and staff development and accountability. The ideal candidate is a strong people leader who can set the pace for daily work, model professionalism, maintain accountability, and foster a positive, mission-driven team culture. Key Responsibilities: Operations & Crew Leadership Lead daily field operations by dispatching and accompanying crews to landscaping, public space maintenance, tree care, and special projects. Serve as the primary on-site supervisor for Operations Technicians and workforce development participants. Set clear daily work plans, expectations, and timelines to ensure crews are prepared and successful. Lead crews of 3–6 staff, adjusting assignments based on skill level, project needs, and safety considerations. Monitor work quality and productivity, providing real-time coaching and corrective guidance as needed. Ensure all work is completed in accordance with safety protocols, work plans, and organizational standards. Serve as the first point of escalation for field-based issues, conflicts, or operational challenges. Workforce Development & Staff Support Support the supervision and mentorship of workforce development participants, modeling professionalism and work readiness. Provide consistent feedback to help participants build technical skills, reliability, and teamwork. Support attendance tracking, timekeeping accuracy, and daily accountability. Identify training needs and communicate skill-development opportunities to Program Coordinators and Directors. Foster a respectful, inclusive, and supportive work environment for all staff. Coordination & Communication Maintain daily communication with Program Coordinators and Directors regarding schedules, staffing needs, and project status. Provide field reports, updates, and observations related to crew performance, site conditions, and equipment needs. Coordinate logistics for tools, vehicles, equipment, and materials required for daily operations. Support special projects, volunteer events, and cross-program activities as assigned. Equipment, Safety & Site Management Ensure tools, vehicles, and equipment are properly staged, used safely, and returned in good condition. Conduct daily safety briefings and enforce PPE and safety standards. Monitor job sites for safety concerns, damage, or unusual conditions and report issues promptly. Support inventory tracking and maintenance of tools and operational equipment. Administrative & HR Support Support HR processes, including onboarding, training documentation, and performance feedback. Assist with documenting incidents, disciplinary actions, and performance concerns in coordination with leadership. Ensure accurate timekeeping and compliance with organizational policies. Model and enforce workplace policies and professional conduct standards. Additional Duties Attend staff meetings, trainings, and program briefings as required. Support Urban Canopy, Community Farming, and other operational programs as needed. Perform other duties as assigned in support of The 6th Branch’s mission and vision. Preferred Qualifications: Minimum of four years of experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, urban forestry, public works, or related field operations. Demonstrated experience supervising crews or teams in a field-based environment. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Experience supporting HR processes such as onboarding, timekeeping, performance management, or staff training. Ability to manage multiple priorities and adjust plans in dynamic environments. High level of attention to detail and organizational skills. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions. Valid driver’s license required; ability to operate vehicles and trailers preferred. Commitment to environmental justice, workforce development, and community-based work. Work Conditions: This position is 90% field-based, requiring work outdoors in various urban environments. Schedules may include early mornings, occasional evenings, weekends, and support for special projects or volunteer events. Protective gear and training will be provided. The position is based in Baltimore City and may involve work across multiple program sites.
