Protection & Control Engineer (Relay Engineer)OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Protection & Control Engineer to support the design, analysis, and implementation of protection systems for transmission and distribution substations. This role is critical to ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of the electrical grid through proper relay coordination, control system design, and system analysis.Key ResponsibilitiesProtection System Design & EngineeringDesign protection schemes for transmission and distribution substations (12kV–345kV)Develop and implement relay settings for:Transformer protectionTransmission line protectionBus differential protectionBreaker failure protectionPerform relay coordination studies to ensure proper operation between upstream and downstream devicesApply protection philosophies aligned with utility standards and grid reliability requirementsControl System DesignDevelop AC/DC control schematics for substation equipmentDesign breaker control, interlocking, and alarm logicIntegrate protection systems with SCADA/RTU and substation automation systemsSupport communication protocols such as DNP3 and IEC 61850System Studies & AnalysisPerform short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies using tools such as ETAP, ASPEN, or CAPEAnalyze system disturbances, fault events, and relay misoperationsSupport root cause analysis and corrective action developmentTesting & Commissioning SupportProvide engineering support during relay testing and substation commissioningReview and validate:Secondary injection test resultsEnd-to-end relay testingSupport energization of new and upgraded substationsCoordinate with field technicians and commissioning teamsStandards & ComplianceEnsure designs meet utility standards and industry best practicesSupport compliance with applicable NERC reliability standardsMaintain accurate documentation for relay settings, logic diagrams, and system changesCapital Project SupportSupport engineering design and execution of substation capital projectsCoordinate with physical substation engineers, project managers, and construction teamsReview vendor/contractor drawings and as-built documentationOperational SupportProvide engineering support during system faults and outage restorationAssist system operations teams with real-time troubleshootingParticipate in post-event analysis and reportingRequired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related fieldExperience in protection & control engineering within utility or industrial power systemsStrong understanding of power system protection principles and relay coordinationHands-on experience with relay platforms such as SEL, GE Multilin, or SiemensKnowledge of AC/DC control circuits and substation automation systemsExperience with power system study tools (ETAP, ASPEN, CAPE, or equivalent)Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skillsPreferred QualificationsExperience with high-voltage substations (69kV–345kV)Familiarity with SCADA/RTU integration and communication protocols (DNP3, IEC 61850)Experience supporting transmission or substation capital projectsExposure to utility operations in complex or urban environmentsProfessional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtainCore CompetenciesPower system analysis and fault evaluationRelay protection coordination and settings developmentAttention to detail in safety-critical environmentsStrong communication with field, operations, and engineering teamsAbility to perform under outage and time-sensitive conditionsTechnical documentation and reportingWork EnvironmentOffice-based engineering with regular field visits to substationsOccasional night/weekend work during outages, testing, or commissioning activitiesCollaborative environment with engineering, operations, and construction teams
