County Engineer
APPLICATIONS/RESUMES ARE BEING ACCEPTED FOR OTTAWA COUNTY ENGINEER FOR A REGISTERED P.E AND P.S.
The position of the Ottawa County Engineer is being vacated by current County Engineer Ronald P. Lajti Jr., P.E., P.S. effective November 15, 2024.
Due to the vacancy and the last occupant of the office elected to serve the current term as an independent, the Board of County Commissioners shall make the appointment in accordance with Ohio Revised Code Section 305.02. The Commissioners shall appoint an individual to this office no later than forty-five days after the vacancy occurs (or December 30, 2024). The eligible individual can be of any political affiliation.
The Board of Commissioners are accepting applications/resumes for those interested in filling the vacancy who must have their primary residency within Ottawa County or must relocate to the county prior to being appointed to the position. The appointment would be valid through December 31, 2026, with the understanding that to maintain the elected position the individual would have to run for election in November of 2026 with a term to start on January 1, 2027.
In accordance with Ohio Revised Code 315.02; no person is eligible in any county as a candidate for such office or shall be elected or appointed thereto unless he is a registered professional engineer and a registered surveyor, licensed to practice in this state.
Per ORC 315.08 the duties of the County Engineer are stated as such: The county engineer shall perform for the county all duties authorized or declared by law to be done by a registered professional engineer or registered surveyor, except those duties described in sections 307.37 and 307.38 and Chapters 343., 6103., and 6117. of the Revised Code. The engineer shall prepare all plans, specifications, details, estimates of cost, and submit forms of contracts for the construction, maintenance, and repair of all bridges, culverts, roads, drains, ditches, roads on county fairgrounds, and other public improvements, except buildings, constructed under the authority of any board within and for the county. The engineer shall not be required to prepare plans, specifications, details, estimates of costs, or forms of contracts for emergency repairs authorized under section 315.13 of the Revised Code, unless the engineer determines them necessary.
The mandated 2025 salary for this position for an Engineer who continues with a private practice is $81,458 and an Engineer without a private practice will be $113,151.
