Senior Electrical Project Engineer - Substation (Remote Option)
Job Description Summary Senior Project Engineer will be designing electrical high voltage substations; a technical leader across engineering teams who ensures the proper performance of on‑shore substation & HVDC/FACTS balance‑of‑plant design packages. The main objective is to plan and lead basic and detailed design, manage and monitor detailed execution progress, and coordinate execution of substation/plant engineering design work packages done by subcontractors. Must be able to self‑perform the design. Work packages may integrate documents required for permits, procurement, manufacturing, and site construction. Work follows customer specifications or requirements and must be aware of customer and national regulations and internal standards. The Senior Project Engineer is able and willing to certify finished engineering products as proper and correct, including Professional Engineering reviews and sealing. The role has a high level of autonomy.
Key Responsibilities Lead the engineering scope of work, including planning schedules, budgets, and monitoring engineering activities and deliverables throughout the project lifecycle.
Provide technical leadership and serve as the primary interface with Tendering, Cost Estimating, Partners, Customers, GE Product Engineering, EHS, Quality, Project Management, Sourcing, and engineering subcontractors.
Ensure all design activities comply with applicable codes, standards, and GE Grid Solutions policies and procedures, while meeting project commitments for quality, schedule, and cost.
Apply deep knowledge of substation equipment and engineering disciplines, including AIS & GIS substations, Transformers, Protection & Control (P&C), HV electrical systems, HVDC and FACTS applications, and basic civil engineering design principles.
Collaborate with engineering teams to design or oversee the design of utility and industrial substations, including power one‑line diagrams, station general arrangements, technical specifications, outdoor station equipment application and installation, building layout arrangements, auxiliary power systems, raceway design, and related engineering studies and calculations.
Establish and implement effective reporting processes to track engineering progress, support on‑time document delivery, and ensure timely responses to customer comments.
Manage technical risk by defining and executing design strategies, design reviews, GATE reviews, and safety reviews.
Use sound engineering judgment to solve complex technical challenges and make critical project decisions.
Serve as a technical resource and mentor to less experienced engineers.
Communicate complex or sensitive technical information clearly to internal and external stakeholders and help build alignment across teams.
Influence project teams, customers, and stakeholders through strong communication and persuasion skills.
Identify significant scope deviations,escalate concerns appropriately, and propose corrective action plans to the Project Engineering Director.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in HVDC systems, FACTS, industrial, renewable, or utility HV/EHV substation design.
Professional Engineering (PE) license in the United States, with the ability and willingness to review and seal drawings.
Ability and willingness to travel up to 20%, including international travel, in compliance with applicable company travel and tax policies.
Preferred Qualifications Experience leading the execution of large and complex substation or plant projects – EPC project experience in the field of high‑voltage substations.
Strong oral and written communication skills, including excellent English grammar, spelling, and syntax.
Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and leadership skills.
Demonstrated ability to analyze issues, solve problems, and make sound decisions.
Strong EHS and quality mindset.
Passion for mentoring and developing technical talent.
Compensation Information For a Canadian‑based position, the pay range is between $138,000 and $172,500 CAD.
For a U.S.‑based position, the pay range is between $113,200 and $188,800.
