Optical Grader Operator
Position Summary
The Optical Grader Operator is responsible for the efficient operation and monitoring of the Tomra/Compac fruit sorting system to ensure consistent product quality, throughput, and equipment performance. This role involves setting up and calibrating the sorter based on product specifications, monitoring grading accuracy, and adjusting parameters as needed to maintain optimal performance. The Optical Grader Operator collaborates with Quality Assurance and Production teams to ensure the correct fruit sizing, color, and defect detection, while maintaining compliance with food safety and company standards. The operator also performs basic maintenance, troubleshooting, and cleaning of the sorter to minimize downtime and ensure smooth operation throughout the shift.
Skills and Responsibilities
Machine Operation & Setup: Operates the Tomra/Compac optical grading and sorting system according to production requirements and product specifications. Calibrates cameras, lighting, and sensors to ensure accurate detection of size, color, and external defects. Loads product efficiently and ensures continuous flow through the sorting process.
Monitoring & Quality Control: Continuously monitors sorter performance to maintain grading accuracy and consistent product quality. Verifies that the correct grading programs are selected for each fruit variety and customer specification. Works closely with the Quality Assurance team to make real-time adjustments based on product quality feedback.
Troubleshooting & Maintenance: Identifies and corrects minor mechanical, software, or calibration issues to minimize downtime. Performs basic preventative maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of sensors, belts, and cameras. Reports recurring or complex technical issues promptly to maintenance or engineering teams.
Production Efficiency & Documentation: Records production data, including throughput, yields, and downtime events. Ensures all production metrics are accurately entered into designated systems or logs. Collaborates with production leadership to achieve target throughput per hour (TPHL) and minimize waste.
Safety & Compliance: Adheres to company safety policies, GMPs, and food safety standards at all times. Keeps the workstation organized and free from hazards, ensuring safe product handling. Participates in audits and supports compliance with regulatory and customer requirements.
Collaboration & Communication: Communicates effectively with Line Leads, Warehouse, and QA to ensure workflow continuity. Notifies supervisors immediately of product shortages, quality issues, or mechanical failures. Supports training of new or less experienced operators when assigned.
Adaptability: Demonstrates flexibility in adapting to changes in product types, schedules, and production demands. Willingness to perform other work-related duties as assigned and support team needs as required.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements
Experience in a packhouse or food manufacturing environment preferred.
Sound mechanical knowledge and experience in maintaining, repairing, and operating machinery and equipment.
Experience with COMPAC sorting/grading equipment and software preferred.
Understanding and/or ability to learn COMPAC mapping process.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. on occasion.
Frequently required to sit.
Frequently required to utilize hand and finger dexterity.
Continually required to speak and listen.
Ability to work in a cold environment (33F – 40F).
