Shop Mechanic
Job Description Summary
This position is responsible for scheduling and performing preventative maintenance as well as troubleshoot and make necessary repairs in the shop. Equipment includes but not limited to; crawler cranes, dozers, skid loaders, wheel loaders, excavators, and various other heavy highway construction equipment as well as some small engines.
Essential Functions
· Troubleshoot and perform repairs on all types of heavy highway construction equipment to include; cranes, bulldozers, excavators, skid loaders, dump trucks, tractor trailers, and various other construction equipment.
· Repairs and adjusts hydraulic pumps, safety valves, and load packers on dump trucks.
· Inspects repairs and adjusts diesel power units, hydraulic systems, injection valves and systems, mold boards, and scarifies on road graders.
· Inspect, adjust and repair gasoline and diesel tractors, and hydraulic and cable operated attachments on tractors.
· Repairs and maintains trenching machines and sets proper grade.
· Perform incidental welding operations on equipment.
· Communicates any unsafe conditions or accidents/injuries in a timely manner to the supervisor in order to facilitate prompt correction or reporting.
· Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless service.
· Attendance required according to company attendance policy to ensure crew is able to operate at normal proficiency level.
· Follow all safety policies and PPE use.
Required Skills and Experience
Two years heavy equipment mechanic work or Heavy Highway Construction Equipment repair experience preferred but not required.
Current valid driver's license (Class B required).
Must be able to manage/operate and train others how to operate a Gomaco paver.
Welding and fabrication experience.
Trained in safety precautions of the trade.
Knowledge/understanding/ability to repair complex machinery and engine parts and components.
Knowledge of operation/maintenance requirements of heavy duty construction equipment.
Knowledge/understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
Ability to identify/solve problems with mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems.
Must be familiar with electronics, be able to read blueprints, or use electronic diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot repairs.
Must be able to read, interpret, and understand electrical and hydraulic schematics along with service manuals to help diagnose issues to be able to make needed repairs

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are normally Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; however, evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.

The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 25 pounds and will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Some equipment can be extremely heavy and will require a lot of strength to move or manipulate. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Must have the ability to quickly respond appropriately to unexpected events.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions, rough and uneven surfaces, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
