Laboratory - Cytotech

Cytogenetic Technologist Performs sample setup, harvesting, slide preparation and staining. Conducts microscopic analysis, photography, karyotyping, and performs FISH analysis. Ensures integrity of specimens during all phases of specimen processing. Performs a variety of culturing procedures including establishing blood, bone marrow, and biopsy cultures. Monitors growth levels and makes decisions regarding feeding, subculturing, and harvesting. Carries out various slide preparations and staining techniques including standard Geisma, Q-, R-, C- banding, and NOR staining. Performs detailed microscopic analysis. Holds responsibility for ruling out chromosomal mosaicism. Makes decisions regarding optimal cells for documentation. Capable of operating automated karyotyping equipment. Performs FISH processing and analysis. Manages record keeping and maintains stock supply levels. Orients new personnel in the lab and institutes new procedures. Implements continued education programs. May apply cryogenic technology in specimen storage. Coordinates specific functions with laboratory personnel in accordance with job description. Manages quality control of culture apparatus that includes monitoring CO2 levels in incubators. Monitors CO2 supply, periodically disinfects incubators, and maintains hoods. Oversees monitoring of liquid N2 levels. Stays knowledgeable about research and development within the cytogenetics field. Performs validation studies for new test development as required. Participates in the compilation of validation data. Reports any issues that might adversely affect patient care to supervisory personnel. Utilizes effective LIS and equipment data management skills. Engages in safe working practices in an area containing biohazardous materials as well as chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. May be required to stoop, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds. Long periods of sitting during analytical procedures and long periods of standing during harvest procedures are expected. Demonstrates manual dexterity.
