Position: Assistant Boys Basketball CoachWage/Hour Status: ExemptReports to: Principal / Athletic Coordinator / Head Boys Basketball Coach / Executive Director of AthleticsPay Grade: Coaching StipendDept./School: La Joya High SchoolInitiated Date: March 2026POSITION SUMMARYLa Joya ISD seeks a dependable and committed Assistant Boys Basketball Coach to support the Head Boys Basketball Coach in the organization, supervision, safety, and development of the boys basketball program at La Joya High School. This position is intended for a current staff member who will assist with coaching responsibilities while supporting the academic, athletic, and personal growth of student-athletes.The Assistant Boys Basketball Coach will help teach basketball fundamentals, promote discipline and teamwork, assist with practices and games, and support the overall vision and expectations established by the Head Coach, campus administration, and La Joya ISD Athletic Department.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESSupport the Head Boys Basketball Coach in implementing the La Joya High School boys basketball program.Assist with daily practices, skill development, conditioning, tactical instruction, and game preparation.Help teach basketball fundamentals, including shooting, passing, dribbling, footwork, defense, rebounding, spacing, communication, and ball control.Support student-athlete development in individual skills, team concepts, fitness, discipline, confidence, and competitive readiness.Assist with warm-ups, cool-downs, stretching, recovery routines, and practice organization.Help monitor student-athlete attendance, effort, behavior, academic progress, and UIL eligibility.Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices, games, tournaments, travel, and team activities.Assist with game preparation, equipment, uniforms, court setup, substitutions, statistics, film, transportation, and team organization.Reinforce program expectations established by the Head Boys Basketball Coach.Promote discipline, teamwork, accountability, sportsmanship, effort, and pride in La Joya High School and La Joya ISD.Maintain positive and professional communication with students, parents, staff, and coaches.Support campus and district athletic department expectations.BASKETBALL PROGRAM SUPPORTAssist in developing proper basketball technique and game understanding.Help student-athletes improve shooting form, ball handling, passing accuracy, defensive stance, rebounding, finishing, court vision, conditioning, and tactical awareness.Support beginner and developing players through patient instruction, repetition, correction, and encouragement.Reinforce safe play, proper use of equipment, and respect for officials, opponents, teammates, and coaches.Assist with equipment management, including basketballs, cones, practice jerseys, uniforms, scorebooks, clocks, film equipment, first-aid supplies, and team materials.Support student-athletes with goal setting, role understanding, game preparation, and team expectations.Assist with tracking attendance, performance, fitness, academic eligibility, statistics, and player development.Support team-building activities and student leadership within the program.Encourage participation, commitment, and year-round athletic development when applicable.Support sub-varsity and feeder program alignment as directed by the Head Boys Basketball Coach.COMPLIANCE AND SAFETYMaintain current CPR, AED, First Aid, concussion, heat illness, and UIL-required certifications.Follow all UIL, TEA, district, campus, and athletic department policies.Ensure student-athletes are supervised at all times during practices, games, tournaments, and travel.Monitor court safety, hydration, equipment condition, and student well-being.Report injuries, incidents, safety concerns, or discipline issues to the Head Coach and Athletic Coordinator in a timely manner.Follow emergency action procedures and district safety expectations.Maintain professional boundaries with student-athletes at all times.Promote safe, age-appropriate basketball development and discourage unsafe play.QUALIFICATIONSCurrent La Joya ISD employee preferred.Valid Texas Teaching Certificate or appropriate employment status with the district.Knowledge of basketball fundamentals preferred.Coaching experience preferred but not required.Ability to work under the direction of the Head Boys Basketball Coach.Strong communication,
