Payroll & Benefits Specialist
We are looking for a data-driven Payroll & Benefits Specialist who views "manual" as a challenge to be solved. Your mission is to move beyond traditional administration by building a scalable, automated payroll and benefits engine. In this role, you won't just process data; you will ensure administrative precision and help shape a strategic support model designed for a distributed, people-first culture. This role will be remote, but will require being in the Tuscaloosa office 2-3 times a month.
Automated Payroll & Compliance
End-to-End Processing: Own the full-cycle payroll process for our multi-state workforce, ensuring 100% accuracy in tax withholdings, deductions, and local filings.
Systems Optimization: Audit existing workflows to identify manual gaps and implement automated solutions within our HRIS.
Audit & Compliance: Act as the primary point of contact for year-end reporting, workers' compensation audits, and 401(k) compliance.
Program Administration: Lead the day-to-day coordination of our benefits offerings, including medical, dental, vision, and mental health resources.
Open Enrollment: Manage the annual open enrollment cycle, from system setup to employee education.
Partner Relations: Own the relationships with insurance carriers and brokers to ensure high service levels and resolve complex claims issues.
Data, Analytics & People Ops
HRIS Partnership: Maintain the integrity of our HRIS data, serving as the technical lead for administrative updates, module enhancements and knowledge transfer.
People Analytics: Partner with the Director, Total Rewards to provide data-driven insights on compensation trends, benefits utilization, and labor costs.
The Lifecycle Experience: Support the "preboarding" phase by coordinating administrative tasks and ensuring a seamless transition from candidate to employee.
Required Experience
The Experience: at least 2 years of experience in payroll and benefits administration, ideally within a high-growth or distributed (remote-first) environment.
Multi-State Expertise: Deep understanding of US state and local payroll and tax regulations across a diverse geographic footprint.
The Tech Stack: Advanced proficiency in HRIS platforms (e.g., UKG Pro or UKG Ready preferred) and a "power user" status in Excel.
The Mindset: You are a problem-solver who enjoys building systems and workflows that make life easier for everyone.
Communication: Ability to translate complex tax or benefits jargon into simple, empathetic language for our team.
