Associate Computer Engineer-Sensing and Communication Systems (REQ 346)

Overview: Applied Physical Sciences (APS) is looking for a highly motivated entry level Associate Computer Engineer to join our Sensing and Communications Division. Successful candidates will have a BS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or similar technical field with a focus in embedded digital signal processing. No professional experience is required, but relevant internship experiences are preferred. Successful applicants will support the development of state-of-the-art remote sensing and communication systems for autonomous underwater vehicles, undersea systems, and other marine applications.APS works on exciting, technically challenging, cutting-edge technologies that will expose candidates to a wide variety of multidisciplinary fields and allow for unique growth opportunities and learning experiences. At APS you will work in a small company environment where technical excellence is rewarded and an entrepreneurial spirit is encouraged, and you will have the chance to work directly with colleagues and customers that value innovation and creativity.Job Functions and ResponsibilitiesSupport the entire arc of marine system development, starting with conceptualization and design, then to production planning, procurement, fabrication, component level testing and finally to system integration, system testing and sustainment.Traveling in support of testing, approximately 5-15% of the yearDesign and fabrication of oceanographic mooringsDesign, fabrication and testing of subsea wet cablesMaintenance and operation of oceanographic instrumentation and unmanned platformsWriting procedures in support of fabrication and testingImplementing lessons learned from previous projectsIntegration and optimization of test gear and assets going to seaPreparing for and executing pier-side and at-sea testingRequired Skills and AttributesBS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical EngineeringStrong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude with the ability to independently solve moderately complex problemsAbility to read and interpret mechanical drawings and electrical schematicsAbility to use basic hand tools and electrical test and measurement equipmentExcellent verbal and written communication to accurately document and report findings to colleagues, customers, vendors, etc.Writing procedures in support of integration, production and testingExperience with basic data plotting and analysis using Python, MATLAB or equivalentOrganized and detail orientedAbility to grasp, organize, and communicate complex concepts both electrical and organizational and interface with multi-disciplinary team.Basic proficiency interfacing with Linux based systemsPreferred Skills and AttributesBS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering with 1-2 years of industry experience in defense and undersea/maritime domains.Experience with Altium, ORCAD or similar electronic schematic capture/simulation toolsExperience with SolidWorks, CAD or other solid modeling toolFamiliarity with subsea wet cable design and constructionExperience at sea and familiarity with offshore riggingExperience with mechanical production and sustainment of maritime systemsFamiliarity with localization methods including beamformingExperience with acoustic propagation models such as BELLHOP, RAY or CASS/GRABExperience or familiarity with electronics assembly, wiring, crimping, and solderingProficiency with electronic laboratory test equipment including digital multi-meter, oscilloscope, function generator, digital voltage and current measurement probes.Experience working in an R&D environment and working in small multidisciplinary teamsAPS, a wholly owned subsidiary of the General Dynamics Corporation, offers competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and comfortable working conditions.
