Founded in 1977 to help Latino’s learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Biology Adjunct Instructor is responsible for the implementation of curriculum and preparing students for college/university level Biology and Science Studies. Instructors must create classes that are rigorous, pertinent, and meaningful for students. In addition, the biology Instructor will be required to help students gain skills in the following areas: setting seminar goals and acquiring solid motivation, time management, test-taking skills, as well as studying tips.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides an effective learning environment that encourages students’ intellectual curiosity and supports students' problem solving by using discipline-specific strategies.
Develop and deliver course content for undergraduate biology courses.
Prepares syllabi for such courses.
Conducts laboratory sessions and ensure student safety.
Ensures curriculum development and course planning.
Develops and designs assessment processes for regular and constructive feedback in a timely manner.
Evaluate and document student performance.
Ensures assessments are graded and outcomes posted in Canvas timely.
Currently engaged with innovations and current trends in science and academic disciplines as they pertain to pedagogy and technology.
Committed to excellence in teaching and a commitment to integrating new technologies in the learning process.
Supports a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students.
Uses a variety of teaching methods to meet students’ learning needs, abilities, and interests.
Teaches in a manner consistent with the philosophy, policies, and guidelines of the Instituto College.
Utilizes technology and online resources to enhance teaching practices.
Maintains office hours for student consultations.
Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Biology or one of the biological sciences
Two years of college teaching experience preferred
Strong knowledge of undergraduate biology curriculum
Knowledge of current pedagogical strategies
Ability to develop and deliver effective lectures and labs
Dedication to continuous professional development
Proficiency with educational technology and software
Excellent verbal and written skills required with the ability to communicate persuasively with tact and diplomacy
Ability to work in a culturally diverse work environment
Experience with a diverse, multi-lingual student population desired
Proficiency in Microsoft office applications

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, as well as set-up and maintain work files.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general office environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours may be required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
