The unit has 4 Labor and Delivery beds and 1 triage bed. There are 4 postpartum beds on the unit. The unit performs approximately 220 births per year. We follow AWHONN guidelines for staffing ratios as much as possible. RNs are required to titrate drips, including Pitocin, Magnesium, Insulin, and D10. There is a minimum staffing of 2 RNs per shift, with the possibility of 3. The charge nurse takes patients and manages the unit. There are no nurse aids or surgical techs on the unit. OB/Neonatologists and Anesthesia are not in-house 24/7. The unit uses bubble CPAP and has RNs read their own strips as there are no tele/monitor techs. The EFM System used is OBIX. Shifts and schedules are managed by the RNs themselves with balance reviewed by management. Weekend requirements include 3 weekends in a 6-week schedule. Holidays are scheduled in rotation across the unit. There is a call requirement, with each RN taking turns based on census needs. Floating may occur within designated zones if there is an extreme need. The dress code is provided and requires blue scrubs. Unit and department-specific orientation is provided over 1-2 shifts. Cancellation policy allows for the hospital to cancel up to 4 shifts during the 13-week assignment. Charting is performed using the EPIC system. BSN is not required for this position. The trauma level and care setting are acute. Nursing division is the focus of this position. Night shifts require coverage every other weekend with call responsibilities.
