Staff Counsel
About The Position
Under the direction and supervision of senior attorneys, the individual in this position gathers information, identifies and analyzes legal issues of moderate complexity; provides advice and counsel to business unit personnel; reviews various contracts including software licenses, performs legal research and handles litigation matters. This position will support and advise various business units across the organization on legal, compliance and regulatory matters impacting the company.
This position is ideal for someone who is intellectually curious, brings strong business acumen, work ethic, embraces complexity, and enjoys partnering with cross-functional teams to navigate legal and regulatory challenges in a complex environment.
Work location: Local candidates to the Boca Raton area only, commuters from St. Lucie County to the north and from Miami-Dade County to the south.
Work arrangement: Hybrid; work-from-home option available with the expectation of in-office attendance as needed.
What You'll Do
Meet with business unit personnel to gather information to analyze legal issues; provide legal recommendations under the direction of senior attorneys.
Review, draft and negotiate contracts of moderate complexity including software licenses and technology agreements.
Monitor court decisions and federal/state legislative and regulatory developments affecting NCCI; conduct legal and regulatory research, analyze applicable laws, regulations, insurance department bulletins, and prepare legal memoranda and guidance to support business operations. Work with outside counsel/carriers on corporate litigation matters; coordinate responses to subpoenas; may attend depositions and mediations.
Research, draft and prepare articles and white papers for publication. Coordinate Legal Department projects.
What It Takes
Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school and licensed to practice law in a particular state.
Four (4) years of related experience (e.g., law firm or corporate legal department), substantive experience in general corporate, contract, compliance, technology and/or insurance law, litigation management, drafting commercial contracts, and/or performing complex legal research.
Legal knowledge and the ability to perform complex legal research analysis and provide recommendations.
Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to present to various groups including executive management.
Knowledge of computer-related software and research databases (Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis).
Ability to critically think, read the room, multitask and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
