Architectural Historian

MASON is seeking an Architectural Historian to join our preservation and historic consulting team in Honolulu. This role involves researching historic buildings and infrastructure, evaluating significance and integrity, and preparing documentation and reports for historic preservation review.The position includes both fieldwork and office-based research and writing. About 35% of the work is in the field and 65% is in the office, with work that may include site visits across Oʻahu and the Pacific region.What you’ll doConduct historical research and field investigations for buildings and infrastructure resources.Evaluate historic significance, integrity, and project effects on historic resources.Prepare HABS/HAER/HALS documentation, National and Hawaiʻi Register nominations, historic inventory surveys, context studies, and SHPD review materials.What we’re looking forMaster’s degree in history or a historic preservation-related field.Familiarity with National Register of Historic Places guidelines for evaluating significance.Preferred qualificationsProject management experience.Interest or experience in Hawaiian history and military history; Cold War era knowledge is a plus.Familiarity with Section 106, Hawaiʻi Administrative Rules §13-275/§13-284, and HRS Chapter 6E.GIS skills.Photoshop/InDesign experience.Additional requirementsCurrent Oʻahu residency or willingness to relocate.Ability to travel to the Pacific region, including Guam.Valid driver’s license.Compensation and benefitsSalary: $65,000–$85,000 annually, commensurate with experience.Health and dental insurance.401(k) with company match.Transportation allowance.Continuing education budget.Monthly gym membership allowance.
