Software Engineer — Technical Documentation Contributor (Contract, Remote)

Company Description Specific Specialists works with experienced engineers to build high-quality datasets of human-authored technical writing. We're looking for software engineers and data scientists to contribute the kind of documents you already write at work — the ones where you reason through a problem before anyone writes code. What we're looking forWe want documents that show your thinking, not documents that describe a finished system. The difference matters: a page of API reference tells us what something does, but a design doc arguing why you chose Postgres over DynamoDB — and what you gave up — captures how an engineer actually reasons.Documents that fit:Design docs and RFCs where you weighed multiple approaches and picked oneArchitecture Decision Records (ADRs) with the rationale spelled outTechnical proposals and system design write-upsPRDs and scoping documents with tradeoffs and non-goalsMigration plans, including what could go wrong and how you'd handle itPostmortems and incident write-ups with real root-cause reasoningBuild-vs-buy analyses and technology evaluationsExperiment design docs and analysis write-ups (for data scientists)Capacity, reliability, or performance planning docsDocuments that don't fit:Source code, or documentation auto-generated from codeAPI reference pages, changelogs, or release notesBlog posts, tutorials, or conference talksAnything written primarily by an AI toolWhat makes a strong submissionYou were the author or the primary author3–10 pages of substantive contentIt reads like a real working document — assumptions, open questions, disagreement, revision marks, and rough edges are all welcomeThe reasoning is visible: what you considered, what you rejected, and whyCompensation$20 per accepted document. We review submissions within 1 day and give specific feedback rather than silently rejecting work. Contributors who consistently submit strong documents are invited into ongoing, higher-volume projects. How to applyApply by submitting a 1 - 2 document sample in our marketplace, also let us know how many documents you have to contribute. If your documents fit, we'll follow up by email with onboarding and payment next steps.
