High School Counselor
Summit Academy High School has an opening for a High School Counselor for the 2026-2027 School Year.
Purpose Statement
This position works with school faculty, staff, parents, and community to plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program. Counsel students to fully develop each student’s academic, personal, and social abilities while addressing the needs of special population students.
This job reports to the School Principal
Essential Functions
Plan and Maintain an effective Comprehensive School Counseling Program.
Communicates the goals of the comprehensive Counseling Program to Stakeholders.
Maintains current and appropriate program data for Stakeholders.
Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data.
Provide services through the Guidance Curriculum
Assists all students, individually or in groups, with developing academic, career and personal/social skills/behavioral, goals and plans.
Assess student needs using multiple sources of data for the purpose of developing and implementing individualized plans of services to support educational objectives.
Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in the school-wide integration of the Comprehensive Counseling and Program model.
Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational and career planning.
Participates in Professional Development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
Uses available technology resources to enhance the LEA’s counseling program such as websites, interest surveys, and other linked resources.
The Counselor will support as student/teacher schedules are coordinated. The Counselor is active in presenting the registration materials to students.
Function as a member of the Special Education team and attend team, Individual Education Plan (IEP) meetings, and others as needed and/or directed by the LEA representative.
Consult with parents, teachers and other school personnel for the purpose of determining causes of, and solutions for, student problems.
Coordinate activities with a variety of outside service agencies, school sites, etc. (e.g. mental health, medical, etc.) for the purpose of providing referrals or services for families and/or students.
Assist in the development of classroom management and mental health programs and interventions designed to provide appropriate educational opportunities for all students.
Counsel students, on an individual or group basis, for the purpose of assisting with intervention and support with behavior, school progress, and/or mental or physical disabilities.
Cooperate with educators and support personnel in scheduling students for services.
Provide the principal with a daily schedule of student contacts and related activities. The schedule will be reviewed and updated as needed.
Maintain a variety of electronic and print case records for the purpose of documenting activities and complying with mandated requirements. Maintain Medicaid logs on Special Education students who are receiving Guidance services.
Act as a liaison between school and outside agencies to meet mental health needs of students.
Provide in-service and materials to parents, educators and other team members related to mental health issues.
May conduct annual reviews, implement, and monitor Section 504 plans as needed and assigned by the LEA
Respond to requests for intervention in situations that could negatively impact the student's education plan for the purpose of addressing student needs and changing unproductive behavior.
Implement an effective referral and follow-up process.
Accurately and appropriately use assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.
Work with the administration to create, coordinate and implement student orientation programs for incoming students. Licensed Personnel. well as self-selected professional growth activities.
Attend and participate in faculty/department meetings as required.
Participate in a reasonable number of LEA committees as requested.
Follow LEA procurement guidelines with administrative approval for purchases within the department.
Create a clean and organized environment that is conducive to student learning.
Responsible for understanding and adhering to all District policies and complete the annual crucial policy review.
Maintain records and required information in a secure location. Maintain confidentiality of all student information.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the Charter School(s).

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade
skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to
satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
operating standard office equipment
including using pertinent software applications;
preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE
Requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Requires a valid Professional Educator License for the State of Utah within the relevant “License Area of Concentration”
Read a variety of manuals,
Write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and solve practical problems.
Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include:
Methods and procedures used in the purchasing of charter school supplies and
equipment;
Concepts of grammar and punctuation; and modern office practices,
Procedures and Equipment.
Knowledge of State Core Curriculum and Board of Education adopted guidelines.ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; often gather, collate, and/or
classify data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others
in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes;
and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a
diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize specific,
job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans.
Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem
solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability based competencies required to

communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; setting priorities;

Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following
physical demands:
some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and significant fine finger dexterity.
Generally, the job requires 70% sitting, 20% walking, and 10% standing.

Pay: $54,674.33 - $80,000.00 per year
