Group Controller
We are seeking a Group Controller for our growing client in the RTP area.An established and growing multi-entity organization is adding a Group Controller to its corporate finance organization. This role will be instrumental in supporting a complex operating structure that includes multiple businesses and continued acquisition activity.The position combines consolidated financial reporting, technical accounting, acquisition accounting, debt and equity accounting, audit coordination, and accounting process development. In addition to owning important corporate accounting responsibilities, this individual will act as a resource to entity finance leaders, helping establish consistent accounting practices and strengthen the overall finance organization.This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced CPA who enjoys working through complex accounting matters, partnering with senior leadership, and creating systems and processes that can support a growing organization.Core ResponsibilitiesFinancial Reporting & ConsolidationManage the preparation of consolidated financial results on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.Coordinate reporting activities across multiple operating entities and ensure financial information is received accurately and within established deadlines.Review intercompany balances and activity and oversee required elimination and consolidation adjustments.Prepare consolidated financial statements and related management schedules.Work with Entity Controllers to improve close procedures, reporting accuracy, and consistency.Investigate unusual or significant fluctuations and ensure appropriate accounting treatment.Complex/Technical AccountingResearch and resolve complex accounting questions arising from operations, contracts, financing arrangements, and strategic transactions.Develop written accounting conclusions and maintain appropriate supporting documentation.Advise operating businesses and finance leadership regarding the application of U.S. GAAP.Provide technical guidance related to revenue recognition, leases, acquisitions, goodwill and intangible assets, debt, equity, and incentive compensation.Partner with FP&A on forecasts, budgets, and business initiatives where accounting treatment may affect financial results.Help establish and maintain company-wide accounting policies and standards.M&A Accounting & IntegrationParticipate in accounting and financial diligence associated with potential acquisitions.Review historical financial information, working capital, earnings quality, and other accounting considerations during the diligence process.Coordinate with outside advisors and other members of the transaction team.Take ownership of purchase accounting following completed transactions.Prepare acquisition opening balance sheets, purchase price allocations, and related accounting analyses.Manage measurement-period adjustments and maintain required acquisition documentation.Work with acquired businesses to transition accounting policies, reporting structures, charts of accounts, close calendars, and financial reporting requirements.Help ensure acquired organizations are successfully incorporated into the corporate accounting environment.Financing & Capital TransactionsProvide accounting support for new and existing financing arrangements, including credit facilities, refinancing transactions, seller financing, earnouts, and equity transactions.Analyze accounting implications associated with debt modifications, refinancing, extinguishment, classification, valuation, issuance costs, and other complex financing provisions.Partner with Treasury and senior finance leadership before transactions are completed to identify accounting and reporting considerations.Prepare recurring lender reporting and covenant compliance calculations.Reconcile covenant schedules to the underlying financial statements and ensure deliverables are completed accurately and on time.Audit & Internal ControlsCoordinate with external auditors throughout the annual audit cycle.Organize and oversee assigned audit support, schedules, reconciliations, and documentation.Actively address accounting questions and potential audit issues before they result in adjustments.Assist with the development and enhancement of corporate accounting controls.Document key processes and evaluate the effectiveness of established controls.Provide support for lender examinations, tax-related accounting, insurance and bonding reviews, and other assurance activities.Executive ReportingAssist with the preparation of quarterly financial materials for executive leadership and the Board.Provide consolidated financial information, acquisition updates, covenant reporting, and supporting analysis for senior management.Help develop clear explanations of financial results, accounting matters, and significant transactions.Assist with materials prepared for lenders, the Audit Committee, and other stakeholders.Present accounting conclusions and respond to questions from senior leaders when appropriate.Finance Team Partnership & DevelopmentAct as a technical and operational resource for Entity Controllers and accounting teams within the business units.Provide coaching and guidance on accounting policies, financial reporting, internal controls, revenue recognition, and close requirements.Help operating teams strengthen their accounting processes rather than simply taking responsibility for their work.Develop training and resources that promote consistent accounting practices throughout the organization.Serve as an escalation point for complex accounting questions.Participate in efforts to build a deeper and more capable finance organization as the company expands.Technology & Continuous ImprovementPartner with technology and finance systems teams on ERP projects, reporting enhancements, and consolidation initiatives.Help standardize charts of accounts, reporting structures, and financial data across operating entities.Identify opportunities to simplify and automate accounting processes.Evaluate technology and AI solutions that can reduce repetitive manual work and improve reporting efficiency.Contribute to the development of scalable accounting infrastructure capable of supporting future acquisitions and growth.QualificationsRequiredBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.Active CPA license.8+ years of progressive accounting experience with a combination of public accounting and corporate/industry experience.Demonstrated experience managing or significantly contributing to multi-entity consolidations.Strong technical accounting background with hands-on knowledge of:Business combinationsRevenue recognitionDebt and equity transactionsLeasesGoodwill and intangible assetsIncentive compensationDirect experience supporting acquisitions from diligence through purchase accounting and integration.Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting principles.Ability to work competing priorities, and collaborate with senior leadership.Preferred ExperienceBackground in industrial services, manufacturing, construction, engineering, project-based businesses, or other multi-location service organizations.Experience working for a private-equity-backed or institutionally funded company.Familiarity with lender relationships and recurring financial covenant requirements.Experience integrating acquired companies into centralized accounting functions.Experience establishing shared-services accounting processes or standardizing finance operations.History of developing accounting professionals or supporting finance teams across multiple locations.
