Return to the Job DescriptionChatham County is seeking an enthusiastic, responsible, and experienced individual to join our Summer Camp team. As the Lead Camp Counselor, you will serve as a key member of the camp leadership team, providing supervision, guidance, and support to counselors, junior counselors, and campers. You will assist in coordinating daily activities, ensuring the safety and well-being of campers, and fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment. This position offers an exciting opportunity to take on a leadership role while making a meaningful impact on the camp community. Hours and Pay Summer camp runs from June 29, 2026 through August 21, 2026. Summer camp will operate Monday-Friday, 7am-6pm. Lead Counselors will be compensated $18.00 per hour. Essential FunctionsProvide leadership and direction to counselors during assigned shifts, delegating tasks, and overseeing the implementation of daily schedules and activities. Assist in the planning and organization of camp programs, including outdoor games, arts and crafts, nature activities, and team-building exercises, to ensure a diverse and engaging experience for campers. Supervise and mentor counselors, offering guidance, feedback, and support to enhance their performance and professional development. Serve as a role model for campers and staff, demonstrating respect, responsibility, and positive communication skills in all interactions. Monitor the safety and well-being of campers at all times, addressing any concerns or incidents promptly and following established protocols. Collaborate with camp leadership to maintain cleanliness and organization in camp facilities, equipment, and activity areas, ensuring a safe and enjoyable environment for all. Assist in the resolution of conflicts and behavioral issues among campers, utilizing conflict resolution techniques and promoting positive peer interactions. Communicate regularly with camp leadership, fellow counselors, and parents/guardians to provide updates on camper progress, staff performance, and any issues or concerns. Participate in staff training sessions, meetings, and evaluations to enhance job performance, leadership skills, and overall camp operations. Adhere to all camp policies, procedures, and safety guidelines, modeling responsible behavior and ensuring compliance among staff and campers. Minimum QualificationsMust be at least 21 years old by June 21, 2026. Experience working with youth ages 5-18 is encouraged. Must be able to work up to 40 hours per week for 8 weeks. Must be available for training on June 15-16, 2026. Must have or obtain a current CPR certification. Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesPhysical RequirementThis work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; safely and responsibly use park and/or recreation equipment; work regularly requires prolonged standing, walking, use of hands and fingers, handling or feeling, frequently requires speaking or hearing, reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, smelling, pushing, pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; work requires vocal communication to express or exchange ideas orally; work requires hearing to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work requires visually inspecting small defects and/or small parts, using measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock, exposure to vibration, wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic). Special RequirementsMust be fingerprinted and successfully pass a Criminal History Record Check with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations (NCSBI)Counselors are expected to be role models at all times, pay attention to details, adhere to Chatham County policies and procedures, attend training prior to the start of camp, and have reliable transportation to and from work. There will be opportunities for work at the Chatham Grove Community Center's Specialty Style Camps as well as at Traditional Summer Camp at Northwest District Park.
