Proof of license(s), certification(s), and/or educationmustbe submitted with each application.Examples of DutiesUnder general supervision, conducts background investigations of candidates for employment. Gathers, verifies, and analyzes information regarding applicants to assist in identifying suitable employees.Performs background investigations of employment candidates in accordance with departmental policies and goals, applicable laws, and procedural requirements.Gathers, verifies, and analyzes personal, financial, and educational documentation.Develops and pursues lines of inquiry.Interviews, in person and by telephone, applicants' former employers, current references, associates, and neighbors.Contacts other law enforcement agencies, governments, and professional organizations to obtain and verify information.Analyzes investigation results and draws logical and objective conclusions.Takes fingerprints and submits fingerprint cards for records checks.Maintains records of information obtained through interviews and by other means.Prepares detailed written reports of investigations.Operates a vehicle to travel to investigation sites.Participates in various pre-employment events.Performs pre-employment interviews of applicants.Assists in administering physical agility and other applicant tests.Assists applicants in completing forms.Examples of Other DutiesAttends training sessions.Participates in seminars and conferences.Trains and advises other background investigators and others.Performs other related duties as required.(NOTE: The duties and responsibilities listed above are for the purpose of determining a common set of minimum qualifications for all positions in this class. Each position may not be required to perform all of the essential job functions listed.)QualificationsPossession of a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.PlusFour years' experience performing employment investigations, police field investigations, and/or other related investigations.(Additional education in criminal justice or a related field may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience.)Preferred QualificationsNCIC and LiveScan CertificationsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level)Knowledge of investigative principles, practices, techniques, and methods.Skill in conducting investigations. Skill in analyzing investigation results.Ability to perform background investigations of employment candidates.Ability to interview and obtain information from applicants and references.Ability to analyze investigation results.Ability to maintain written records and prepare reports.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, the public, and applicants.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Full Performance)Knowledge of County and Departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, and methods of conducting background investigations.Knowledge of equal employment opportunity laws.Skill in performing background investigations of employment candidates.Skill in interviewing and obtaining information from applicants and references.Character RequirementsAll applicants must be of good moral character and emotionally stable as determined by a comprehensive background investigation and test for drug use.Licenses and CertificatesPossession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license is required at the time of appointment.Proof of License(s), Certification(s) and EducationApplicants are required to submit proof of license(s), certification(s) and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferredqualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study.
