Materials Engineer I

Materials Engineer I (Laboratory) – Corning, NY CTG is seeking a Materials Engineer I to support laboratory analysis and materials characterization activities for a leading technology company in Corning, NY. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career scientist or engineer who enjoys hands-on laboratory work, microscopy, and analytical testing in a research and manufacturing environment. Location: Corning, NY (100% Onsite) Schedule: Monday–Friday | 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Employment Type: Contract Responsibilities Perform optical microscopy analysis using stereomicroscopy and polarized light microscopy to evaluate glass and material samples. Prepare glass and refractory samples through cutting, mounting, epoxying, grinding, and polishing. Support liquidus and devitrification testing using established laboratory procedures. Conduct analytical testing utilizing SEM/EDX and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). Identify crystalline phases and document analytical observations. Compile laboratory data and prepare reports for engineering and scientific teams. Track samples, prioritize laboratory workload, and maintain accurate documentation. Support laboratory operations, equipment readiness, and inventory management. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Geology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related scientific discipline. 0–3 years of laboratory, research, or materials analysis experience. Experience working in a laboratory environment. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Ability to work independently while collaborating with engineers and scientists. Comfortable lifting up to 25 lbs. Preferred Qualifications Hands-on experience with optical microscopy. Experience with SEM/EDX, XRD, or other analytical laboratory instrumentation. Experience preparing laboratory samples (mounting, grinding, polishing, cutting, or epoxying). Knowledge of glass, ceramics, minerals, refractories, or other engineering materials. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
