Lead Plumber – Heat Pump Water Heater Installations
Position Summary
The Lead Plumber is responsible for performing and overseeing plumbing repairs and the installation, replacement, and commissioning of heat pump hot water heaters. This role serves as the technical lead in the field, ensuring all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with applicable codes, manufacturer specifications, and company quality standards.
In addition to hands-on plumbing work, the Lead Plumber may provide guidance to junior technicians, coordinate with program management, and serve as a primary on-site representative to customers.
Key Responsibilities
Plumbing Repairs & Installations
Perform residential and/or light commercial plumbing repairs, diagnostics, and system troubleshooting
Install, replace, and commission heat pump hot water heaters in accordance with manufacturer specifications
Remove and dispose of existing water heaters and related materials as required
Modify or install water, drain, condensate, and relief valve piping as needed
Ensure proper electrical coordination and clearances in collaboration with electrical personnel
Technical Leadership & Quality Control
Serve as the lead technician on assigned jobs, ensuring work is completed correctly and efficiently
Review scopes of work and job documentation prior to installation
Verify all installations meet local, state, and national plumbing codes
Perform final system checks, testing, and start-up procedures
Safety & Compliance
Adhere to all safety policies, OSHA standards, and jobsite safety requirements
Ensure proper handling of tools, equipment, and materials
Identify and address potential safety or code compliance issues on-site
Customer Interaction & Documentation
Communicate clearly and professionally with customers regarding work performed
Explain system operation, basic maintenance, and warranty information to customers
Complete job documentation, photos, and installation checklists accurately and timely
Coordinate with office and program staff on job completion and follow-up needs
Team & Program Coordination
Provide direction and support to apprentice or junior plumbers when assigned
Coordinate with program coordinators, schedulers, and inspectors as needed
Identify field conditions that require change orders or scope adjustments
Qualifications
Valid Journeyman or Master Plumber license (as required by state/local regulations)
5+ years of plumbing experience, including water heater installations
Demonstrated experience installing or servicing heat pump water heaters preferred
Strong knowledge of plumbing codes, safety standards, and best practices
Ability to read and interpret work orders, scopes of work, and technical manuals
Clean driving record and valid driver’s license
Must be able to travel and stay overnight based on program needs
Preferred Qualifications
Manufacturer training or certification for heat pump water heaters
Experience with energy efficiency or electrification programs
Supervisory or lead technician experience
EPA or related energy-efficiency certifications
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs
Comfortable working in mechanical rooms, garages, and confined spaces
Ability to stand, kneel, bend, and climb as required by job conditions
Field-based role with daily travel to job sites
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
