Associate Microbiologist

Innospec Performance Chemicals is seeking a Salisbury-based Associate Quality Control Microbiologist to support the release of commercial products from both of the North Carolina manufacturing plants. The Associate QC microbiologist will work with the supervising QC Microbiologist in Innospec’s new microbiology laboratory and must demonstrate special attention to safety, organization, and communication. Candidate will be responsible for adhering to SOPs for microbiology Quality Control testing of existing products based on industry standard methods. Tests may include various antimicrobial performance bioburden challenge studies for new and existing products. Primary Responsibilities: Perform standard microbiology enumerations for all samples from Salisbury and High Point sites. This will include both plating or filter plating for bacteria, yeast, and mold, and preparing media and neutralizing dilution buffer. Perform Gram Staining on all positive samples from bacteria plate counts. · Test local plant water sources for Total Faecal Coliform. Routine laboratory equipment maintenance as identified. Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory. Develop timely and organized QC reports of all samples. · Keep accurate records of the day-to-day lab activities. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications/Education: Minimum Bachelor’s degree, or an Associate’s degree with microbiology lab-course experience. Microbiology, biology, or a biotechnology field preferred. 1 – 4 years of experience in the industry; new graduates will be considered.(?) Basic knowledge and experience of microbiology, culturing techniques, media preparation and quantitative microbiological methods. Competent in all Microsoft Office suite software, especially Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively (verbal/written). Excellent organizational skills, ability to prioritize multiple tasks/projects with a strong attention to detail. · Must be a team player with excellent problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Exceptional attendance and work ethic. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods during an 8-hour shift. In addition to standing and walking, the frequent physical demands of the position are lifting, carrying, balancing, stooping, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination, and feeling. WORK ENVIRONMENT Subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to laboratory equipment with moving parts and working with chemicals. Requires the use of personal protective equipment including gloves, safety glasses, and at times, protective clothing.
