Base WelderPowell is a manufacturer of switchgear and other electrical equipment. We are currently hiring a Base Welder at our Southeast Houston manufacturing facility. Schedule: Monday-Thursday 5:00am-3:30pm; OT as neededPosition SummaryA structural welder is a skilled professional who specializes in welding and fabricating metal components used in the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures. They are responsible for reading and interpreting blueprints, selecting and preparing materials, and using various welding techniques to join metal parts together. Structural welders must adhere to safety protocols and quality standards to ensure the integrity and strength of the structures they work on.Essential ResponsibilitiesWork individually or as a part of a small team to produce Sheet Metal weldmentsDetermine, from the drawing, where each weld is to be performed, and meet the size and length requirements for each weld specified within the given tolerance allowed.Perform any cosmetic or appearance specifications of the weldment.Perform any cosmetic or appearance specifications of the weldment, which may require grinding welds and sheet metal buffing.Minimum QualificationsSuccessful candidate will typically have 3-5 years of relevant work experienceMust have a basic command of the English language, both written and verbalAbility to execute hot work (any work performed outside of department)Ability to finish grind, surface finishing based on departmental requirementsAbility to repair improper weldsKnowledge of fixtures required for area of responsibilityAbility to tack weldAbility to stud weldAbility to fine tune voltageAbility to square partsAbility to torch cutAbility to arc metal gougeBasic product knowledge (understanding of how work ties into the larger picture) based on departmental need/requirementKnowledge of AWS chart/steel tablesKnowledge of welding symbolsKnowledge of and ability to use basic tools (tape measure squares, clamps, fillet gage, angle finder, etc.)Ability to convert decimals to fractions and utilize conversion chartAbility to effectively communicate with co-workersAbility to effectively work in team environmentAwareness and adherence to Lock Out Tag Out proceduresAbility to follow company operating procedures, safety rules and ISO requirementsAbility to MIG weld mild steelAbility to MIG weld stainless steelAbility to perform basic fittingAbility to adjust machine according to department manual(s)Ability to remove material using grinding processAbility to read drawings and inspect parts for basic dimensionsAbility to perform basic layouts (positioning and alignment)Ability to inspect parts against complex engineered drawingsAbility to spray transfer MIG weldCapability to examine weld bead for acceptable attributesAbility to identify types of copper, stainless grades, etc.Knowledge of flux core, shielded wireAbility to cope and fitMore InformationThis job description outlines the essential functions of the job and does not contain a comprehensive list of all possible responsibilities, tasks, and duties.
