ADAS Camera Validation Engineer
Job Description:This role sits within the autonomy components team, supporting camera-based sensing systems used across Caterpillar’s autonomous, safety, and operator-awareness technologies. The position is focused on technical support and validation of camera systems, working closely with platform and technical leads, as well as external suppliers.The engineer will operate in a mix of office, lab, and field environments, helping drive performance, testing, and issue resolution for a growing camera portfolio.Key ResponsibilitiesThis position is centered around hands-on technical support and system-level validation. Core responsibilities include:Supporting development and execution of camera system testing and validationWriting and executing:Test plansTest proceduresTest reportsPerforming both performance testing (image quality, detection, lighting conditions, field of view) and environmental testing (EMC, durability, lab and third-party facilities)Troubleshooting and investigating technical issues and field returnsWorking with external suppliers / Tier 1 partners producing camera systemsSupporting testing across multiple environments:Lab-based testing (e.g., image tuning, controlled setups using tools like Imatest)Field testing (real-world lighting and application conditions)External validation sites (Mossville or third-party facilities)Assisting the team in improving and expanding performance validation capabilities, especially in real-world applicationsRequired Skills & ExperienceThe role is best suited for a technically hands-on engineer with experience in sensor-based systems and validation work.Key qualifications include:4+ years relevant experienceBachelors degree (**could consider AS degree with very relevant experience – cameras, ADAS)Background in camera systems, ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System), robotics, or machine vision applicationsExperience with performance testing and environmental testingStrong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skillsHands-on experience with lab tools (e.g., oscilloscopes, diagnostic equipment)Ability to write technical documentation (test plans, reports)Comfort working across lab and field environmentsSelf-driven mindset with strong technical curiosityPreferred BackgroundWhile not required, the following experience will strengthen a candidate’s fit:Direct experience with camera system development or validationExposure to smart cameras (onboard processing, object detection)Familiarity with image quality testing tools (e.g., Imatest)Experience with similar sensor technologies such as:LidarRadarUltrasonic sensorsUnderstanding of application-level performance (how sensors function in real-world machine environments)Ideal Candidate ProfileThe ideal candidate is a hands-on, application-focused engineer who can bridge testing, troubleshooting, and real-world system performance.They will typically demonstrate:A self-starter mentality and strong initiative (non-negotiable)Comfort working in ambiguous, evolving technology environmentsPractical experience applying sensors in ADAS, automotive, or robotics use casesAbility to go beyond component-level thinking and understand system/application performanceWillingness to be actively involved in testing, debugging, and field validation—not purely design or software-focused work.
