Manager, Safety and Compliance
This is a full-time, temporary assignment expected to last approximately two years to provide coverage during a military leave of absence.
The Manager, Safety and Compliance is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety and compliance programs across all company operations to protect employees at multiple warehouse locations, the corporate office, and work sites nationwide. This position ensures compliance with OSHA, DOT/FMCSA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations while building a proactive safety culture that reduces risk and supports operational excellence. The position is expected to exercise sound discretion and independent judgment in the performance of the essential job duties.
Key Contributions of the Role
Safety & Compliance Programs
Develop and implement safety programs covering operations, warehouses, office environments, driver safety, contractor management, and emergency preparedness
Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT/FMCSA, and all applicable safety regulations
Create, maintain, and update Safety Manual, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and written safety programs
Conduct facility audits and inspections; monitor corrective action completion
Track safety metrics (incident rates, near-misses, workers' compensation costs, training completion)
Develop a quarterly safety performance dashboard for leadership review
Stay current on regulatory changes and adapt programs accordingly
DOT Compliance Management
Oversee companywide DOT/FMCSA compliance, including driver qualification files, vehicle inspections, and reporting
Ensure fleet safety standards and accident investigation procedures
Oversee fleet program in partnership with Operations leadership
Incident Management & Investigation
Oversee incident reporting system and ensure accurate, timely documentation
Lead investigation of serious injuries, near-misses, and property damage using root cause analysis
Develop and track corrective actions to prevent recurrence
Conduct trend analysis to identify patterns and prioritize prevention efforts
Manage serious incident response, including executive notification, client communication, and regulatory reporting
Cross-Functional Partnership
Partner with Human Resources: Collaborate with HR on accommodation requests and conduct feasibility reviews in the ADA interactive process, and integrate safety into hiring and onboarding
Support Operations Leadership: Daily safety execution, leadership development for managers/supervisors, operational process integration
Collaborate with Client Services: Respond to RFP safety requirements, develop client safety documentation, and support client safety audits
Coordinate with Finance/Procurement: Budget management, insurance carrier partnerships, vendor/contractor safety standards
Work with Facilities: Building safety, emergency action plans, ergonomic workspace standards
Training & Communication
Design and deliver safety training for all employees: new hire orientation, role-specific training, specialized certifications (forklift, aerial lift, first aid/CPR), leadership training, and annual refreshers
Maintain OSHA certification
Communicate safety performance through newsletters, meetings, reports, and dashboards
Develop and maintain a safety champions network across departments and locations
Team Leadership & Strategic Planning
Supervise, coach, and develop Safety Coordinators and other safety staff as the department grows
Build internal safety capability across the organization through training and mentorship
Conduct enterprise-wide risk assessments, identifying hazards across all functions and locations
Benchmark safety performance against industry standards and pursue continuous improvement
Recommend safety investments with clear business justification and ROI analysis
Represent company safety capabilities in client meetings, RFPs, and industry forums
Build and maintain relationships with insurance carriers, regulatory agencies, trade associations, and industry peers
Requirements
Minimum of 5+ years of proven experience as a safety manager
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Proficiency in Windows and Microsoft Office
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry certification required
CSP or ASP strongly preferred
Knowledge of DOT/FMCSA regulations preferred
Expert knowledge of OSHA and DOT/FMCSA regulations
First Aid, CPR, and AED certification required
Excellent knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
Experience with writing policies and procedures for health and safety
Experience with safety management systems and data analysis
Experience with workers' compensation management and insurance carrier partnerships
Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Occupational Health, or related field preferred; equivalent experience considered
Working Conditions
Conduct facility inspections requiring walking, standing, climbing, and accessing all areas
Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds
Work in varied environments (office, warehouse, outdoor sites)
Travel 20-30%, including overnight stays and weekend travel
Flexibility for urgent safety issues outside normal hours
