Design Engineer (Manufacturing Focus)Penco Products is seeking a Design Engineer to support the development and improvement of our storage and material handling products, including lockers, shelving, and racking systems. This role requires a strong balance of product design and hands-on manufacturing engineering experience to ensure designs are functional, cost-effective, and optimized for production.Key ResponsibilitiesDesign and improve products such as lockers, shelving systems, and storage solutions using SolidWorks (preferred) or similar CAD software.Create and maintain detailed engineering drawings, routings, and bills of materials (BOM).Apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM) principles to ensure efficient fabrication and assembly.Work closely with production teams to troubleshoot manufacturing issues and implement design improvements.Support sheet metal fabrication processes including stamping, bending, welding, and assembly.Assist in tooling, fixture design, and process improvements on the shop floor.Participate in product testing, validation, and continuous improvement initiatives.Collaborate with quality, supply chain, and operations to ensure product performance and cost targets are met.QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).Required: Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software.Experience in both product design and manufacturing/production environments.Strong understanding of sheet metal design and fabrication processes.Knowledge of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.Hands-on, problem-solving mindset with the ability to work on the production floor.Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.Preferred ExperienceExperience in metal fabrication, storage products, or similar manufacturing environment.Familiarity with ERP systems and BOM management.Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience.Work EnvironmentOn-site role in a manufacturing facility.Regular interaction with production teams and time spent on the shop floor.Fast-paced environment focused on continuous improvement and product quality.
