Job DescriptionJob Summary:Under the direction of Director of Education and Director of Community Integration, operate a schoolvehicle over designated routes to transport students safely and efficiently to an assigned location on adesignated route; observe legal and non-aggressive defensive driving practices; perform regular safetyinspections; ensure the safety of students during transport, loading and unloading from vehicles.Shifts are either AM (variable hours between 7:00 AM–9:00 AM and 2:00 PM–4:00 PM) or PM driver shifts (2:00 PM–4:00 PM and 6:00 PM–8:00 PM).Duties/Responsibilities:Operate a school vehicle along a designated route; pick up and discharge students inaccordance with time schedules; observe legal and defensive driving practices; assurecompliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the vehicle in accordance with policiesrelated to disciplining students; enforce policies and procedures related to transportation ofstudents.Monitor student activities and behavior; reports observations and/or incidents (e.g., vehiclestop compliance, discipline, accidents, passenger inappropriate social behavior).Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines;administer first aid to passengers as needed.Conduct required daily safety inspections of vehicles; inspect the interior, exterior and engineof vehicles to ensure safe operational condition; report mechanical malfunctions or otherproblems as required.Maintain vehicles in a clean and safe operating condition; wash, sweep and clean the exterior,interior and windows of assigned vehicles; refuel, service and prepare vehicle for operation.Supervise the loading and unloading of students and students with special needs; assurestudents with special needs are seated safety and seat belts, harnesses and wheelchair clampsare secured as required.Provide vehicle evacuation and safety instruction to staff and students. Transport students and staff on field trips or other events; meet scheduled departure andarrival times as assigned.Operate equipment, including seat belts, harnesses and other adaptive equipment asnecessary.Performs other duties as assigned. Knowledge of:Safe and defensive driving practices. Proper operations of school vehicles. Applicable Wisconsin motor vehicle codes and State traffic transportation laws, policies,guidelines and regulations.Basic first aid procedures. Basic record-keeping techniques. Designated vehicle routes, vehicle stops and traffic hazards. Problems and concerns of students with special needs. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Oral and written communication skills. Skills/Ability to:Drive a school vehicle safely and efficiently. Learn and apply policies and procedures related to student discipline on vehicles. Maintain a safe discipline level among passengers. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Learn and follow designated routes. Maintain vehicles in clean and proper working condition. Education and Experience:Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge andabilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities is:Graduation from high school or equivalent GED. Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listedabove.Licenses, Certifications and other Requirements:Valid Wisconsin Class “A” or Class “B” driver’s license with a “P” endorsement. Valid Wisconsin Class C driver’s license. WORKING CONDITIONS:Work Environment:Indoor/outdoor/school vehicle environment. Seasonal heat and cold or adverse weather conditions. Evening or variable hours. Driving a vehicle to conduct work. Physical Demands:Sitting for extended periods of time while operating vehicle. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Reaching, pulling and pushing to open doors. Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to inspect and wash vehicles. Seeing to monitor passengers and operate a vehicle.
