CHILDREN'S LIBRARY ASSISTANT, PART TIME - 2 POSITIONS - BRUNSWICK
This is a part-time position. The work schedule is 20 hours per week and requires working nights, weekends, and during lunch shifts. This position is eligible for prorated paid time off and holiday leave. This position is not eligible for health insurance, disability and pension benefits.
Summary: The purpose of this classification is to develop and implement targeted library services and programs for children, perform routine clerical and customer service work involving circulation desk or technical service functions, including assisting patrons with routine service, checking materials in/out, processing library card applications and book/material requests, coding/preparing new materials, sorting/locating materials, repairing materials, performing data entry, or providing information.
Essential Functions:
Provides professional and courteous customer service to library patrons and the public; greets visitors and directs to areas of library; provides assistance and information related to library services; research book titles, book availability, patron records, or related information; reserves materials for patrons; notifies patrons about overdue books, arrival of reserved books, or other issues; assists patrons with use of computers, copy machine and other equipment.
Plans and presents targeted library programs in coordination with the MOGL Programming Coordinator to encourage reading, viewing, listening, and other use of library materials and facilities; confers with teachers, parents, community, and library groups to assist in developing programs to encourage and improve use of the library for children and overall literacy.
Answers the telephone; provides information and assistance; takes/relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel, libraries, or departments; returns calls as necessary; renews books by telephone.
Checks library materials in/out; operates the library's automated circulation system to charge, discharge, and renew books; retrieves books from book drop; inspects materials for damage and withdraws materials in need of repair from circulation; inspects for routing slips or other identification prior to shelving; routes books to other locations as appropriate; sorts/arranges materials on book carts for shelving.
Collects and records money in payment of fines, fees, book sales, or other library services; writes receipts; removes fine data from computer; counts revenues and balances with receipts.
Returns library books/materials to appropriate shelving areas; shelves/places materials in appropriate order; reads labels to ensure materials belong to assigned branch and are arranged in proper order.
Locates materials and searches for lost/missing materials as needed.
Registers new patrons; enters/updates patron information in computer; prepares replacements for lost library cards.
Provides assistance to library patrons in use of computer resources, including internet access, online card catalog system operations, and online searches; teaches users basic functions and operating techniques; helps users find information online; assists in maintaining computers and performing routine troubleshooting.
Processes new library materials and gift/donated materials as needed; receives materials from vendors and verifies contents against invoices/packing slips.
Maintains current periodicals/newspapers; sorts, stamps, checks in, shelves, and organizes current issues; identifies current issues not received and makes claims for replacement copies.
Repairs/mends damaged books/materials; determines best technique for repair work; channels unrepairable items to discard.
Performs general tasks related to library operations, which may include, recording door statistics, maintaining supplies for patron use, moving book carts, opening/closing library, turning equipment on/off, setting alarm system, monitoring security television monitor, maintaining general appearance of library, cleaning counters, emptying wastebaskets, sweeping floors/steps, or watering plants.
Monitors inventory levels of library supplies and initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
Prepares, completes, or receives various forms, reports, correspondence, emails, library cards, receipts, library card applications, door counts, supply requisitions, time sheets, patron identification, hold requests, interlibrary loan requests, room reservation requests, invoices, packing slips, cash/checks, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Receives, opens and distributes incoming mail; prepares outgoing mail.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, volunteers, library patrons, community organizations, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes database or other computer programs.
Maintains a current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws/ordinances; maintains an awareness of new procedures, trends, and advances in the profession.
Aids patrons or community organizations use of library meeting rooms/facilities Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by six (6) months up to 2 years of previous experience and/or training involving library work, working with children, general clerical work, customer service, or personal computer operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite abilities for this job ad.
