For more information about ECCO Select, visit us at www.eccoselect.com.Position Title: Design Engineer – Protection and ControlsLocation Information Hybrid - Topeka, KSPosition Responsibilities:As a Design Engineer – Protection and Controls, you will contribute to the engineering design of electric substation, transmission line, and generation equipment—including control and system fault protection systems. Working under the guidance of experienced engineering managers, you will collaborate closely with other engineers to develop protection and control (P&C) designs for various projects. Your work will play a vital role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance of electrical infrastructure. Key responsibilities include:Develop designs and technical documentation for protection and control systems related to substations, transmission lines, and generation equipment.Specify substation equipment—including bus, ground mats, conduit, switches, power circuit breakers, transformers, relay panels, instrumentation, capacitor banks, and reactor banks—to ensure adherence to safety and reliability standards.Design protective relay systems, metering systems, and SCADA integrations referencing relevant standards, past projects, regulatory requirements, and system needs.Analyze system ratings, such as voltage, power, ampacity, system impedance, CT ratios, and relay settings, researching current substation configurations to support reporting obligations and system upgrades.Develop comprehensive project scopes and cost estimates for system protection and control projects to support multi-year planning and budgeting efforts.Support operations and construction teams through troubleshooting, failure analysis, mis-operations investigation, testing assistance, commissioning, and other technical support as needed.Prepare, review, and study technical drawings and specifications to ensure installation and operational compliance with all applicable regulations and standards.Guide and oversee designers and technicians, reviewing their work to ensure consistent progress and compliance with safety standards and regulations.Review and provide feedback on substation and transmission line protection and control drawings, including redlining and suggestions for design improvement.Prepare and review detailed bills of materials for system protection and control projects. Essential Skills, ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program is required.Familiarity with engineering principles foundational to system protection and controls, including advanced mathematics and electric power engineering.Ability to interpret and work with schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and logic diagrams related to electrical systems and protective schemes.Basic understanding of Generation, Transmission, and Distribution system relays and associated protection methodologies.Proficiency in developing elementary drawings, relay logic, and protective relay settings.Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective collaboration with engineering and operations staff across departments.Dependable, self-motivated, and highly detail-oriented, with excellent organization and proofreading abilities.Ability to manage multiple priorities, work under pressure, and perform efficiently in high-stress environments.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially when supporting field operations or troubleshooting equipment problems.Ability and willingness to learn company-specific design philosophies and apply them to protection and control projects.Demonstrated proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications is preferred.Qualifications:Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required).Experience with utility or energy industry projects, particularly those focused on substation, generation, or transmission lines, is preferred but not mandatory.Demonstrated ability to quickly learn major systems and company-specific design standards related to protection and control.ECCO Select is committed to hiring and retaining a diverse workforce.
