LABORATORY ANIMAL RESOURCES (IN-LARS-IUINA)The Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC) contributes to and enhances the services and collaborative efforts of medical research at Indiana University (IU) School of Medicine. In addition to the provision of basic husbandry for a wide variety of laboratory animal species, the veterinary staff and other highly experienced laboratory animal professionals of the IU School of Medicine LARC provide training, supplies, and specialized service support for medical research.MissionAt the Laboratory Animal Resource Center, we are dedicated to providing exceptional animal care which exceeds the needs of Indiana University School of Medicine and its research staff.VisionOur vision is top-quality animal care and Principal Investigator (PI) service provided by inspired and valued employees.The field of laboratory animal science has evolved substantially over the past 2 decades. We understand how the laboratory environment can both positively and negatively affect the results of research projects, and we recognize that an educated and empowered animal care team can be effective in working as an unofficial but critical member of the research team utilizing animal models. The LARC staff has deep experience in laboratory animal care and has achieved various levels of certification in laboratory animal science.Provides operational management and oversight of laboratory animal staff, facilities, and activitiesIdentifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve procedures, processes and/or efficiencyDevelops and maintains operating procedures and guidelines for animal care staff and facility usersEnsures compliance per Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and other regulatory agenciesDevelops and enforces procedures to ensure current and continued compliance with regulationsMaintains compliance-related records, information, and/or reportsEnsures adequate staffing and effective schedulingParticipates and informs employment decisions for assigned staffAnalyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staffEstablishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as neededPlans and optimizes use of laboratory animal resources (staff, facilities, equipment)Optimizes space utilization and approves all facility renovationsProvides guidance and regulatory oversight to animal care staff and facility users, including researchers and their assigned technical research staffAssesses performance gaps and training needsProvides training to assigned staff to improve laboratory animal operationsResearches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staffAnalyzes needs, forecasts trends, develops and manages budgets, and approves expendituresParticipates in the development of animal per diem rates and oversees various studies for financial analysisMay participate in seeking and securing external funding in support of operations, including drafting grant proposals and budgetsSupervises the procurement of laboratory animals for research projects from outside vendors and institutions in accordance with all government regulations and campus policiesLeads decisions on products and vendors best suited to researcher's needsManages and oversees procurement and inventory control of all equipment, feed, bedding, and husbandry suppliesContributes to the development of departmental policies, procedures, and processes related to animal husbandryParticipates in training and implementation of standard operating proceduresConducts informational research to ensure compliance with all regulatory and campus policiesDevelops and delivers papers and presentations to related professional associations and groups on behalf of the university as requested/neededEducationRequired: Bachelor's degree (preferably in related scientific field)Work ExperienceRequired: 2 years of lab animal technician and supervisory/lead technician experiencePreferred: 5 years of related experience in the field of laboratory animal science and/or animal facility managementLicenses and CertificatesRequired: Valid driver's license with the ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hireAmerican Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification (2nd level or higher) upon date of hireAALAS Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification within 1 year from date of hireSkillsRequired: Experience in a regulated environmentDemonstrates a high commitment to qualityAbility to lead/manage othersAbility to analyze and interpret financial dataBuilds and manages effective teamsStrong verbal communication and listening skillsMaintains a high degree of professionalismDemonstrates time management and priority setting skillsExcellent organizational skillsExcellent collaboration and team building skillsEffectively coaches and delivers constructive feedbackInstills commitment to organizational goalsKnowledge of federal laws, regulations and guidelines governing the use of animals in research and teachingProven skill in animal handling and restraint across common laboratory animal species; basic biomethodology, including blood collection and injections; and general animal husbandryThe role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the work environment and to position oneself to operate laboratory equipment effectively. The role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds and will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts.
