Principal Electric Propulsion Controls EngineerLocation: San Jose, CaliforniaEmployment Type: Full-TimeWe are seeking a highly experienced Principal Electric Propulsion Controls Engineer to lead the development of advanced control systems for next-generation hybrid-electric propulsion platforms. This role focuses on high-power motor drives, power conversion systems, and embedded real-time control software for aerospace and advanced mobility applications.Key ResponsibilitiesArchitect and implement real-time control algorithms for PMSM motor drives, active front ends, and DC/DC power converters using techniques such as FOC, MTPA/MTPV, flux weakening, observer-based estimation, and advanced PWM methods.Design supervisory energy-management systems coordinating turbine generators, battery systems, propulsion inverters, and HVDC distribution networks.Develop high-frequency modulation strategies for SiC-based power stages while minimizing EMI, harmonic distortion, torque ripple, and thermal stress.Create detailed simulation environments using MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape, and PLECS to model electric machines, converters, batteries, and propulsion architectures.Lead MIL, SIL, and HIL validation activities using Typhoon HIL, OPAL-RT, and Speedgoat platforms, including automated regression and fault-injection testing.Deploy embedded software to DSP and ARM-based platforms using Embedded Coder and optimized C/C++ implementations.Define diagnostics, protection logic, and fail-safe operating states for safety-critical propulsion systems.Support propulsion integration, dyno testing, and aircraft-level system validation activities.Produce development artifacts compliant with aerospace standards including DO-178C and ARP4754B.RequirementsMS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or Power Electronics.8+ years of experience in motor control, embedded systems, or power electronics software.Deep understanding of PMSM vector control, SVPWM/DPWM, sensorless operation, and inverter protection strategies.Experience with SiC MOSFET switching systems and high-voltage power conversion.Strong proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink and real-time embedded development.Hands-on experience with HIL systems and automated testing workflows.Knowledge of aerospace certification processes is highly desirable.If this is of interest, please apply directly and I will contact your directly!
