Ensure the safety and well-being of passengers, crew and the vessel. Exceed guest expectations by actively engaging with them, ensuring their safety, and attending to their needs during the cruise. Deliver engaging and informative narrations about points of interest, history and the river along the route.Essential OutcomesNavigation And Vessel OperationSafely navigate the vessel in various conditions (weather, harbor traffic and river stages and current).Maintain a thorough knowledge of navigational charts, aids to navigation and applicable rules of the road.Operate and monitor all vessel systems (engines, steering, communications, etc.).Conduct regular safety checks and inspections of the vessel.Ensure compliance with all U.S. Coast Guard regulations and company safety procedures.Use prudent judgment in navigating the vessel under varying conditions.Passenger And Crew ManagementOversee and ensure the safety and comfort of passengers.Manage and direct the crew (mate, deckhands, etc.) in their duties.Provide excellent customer service and address passenger inquiries.Maintain order and discipline on board the vessel.Advising crew on best practices in relation to passenger safety and vessel upkeep.Oversee and record Mate and Deckhand training hours and skills (i.e.: steering, logging hours and completion of manual checklists).Safety And SecurityEnsure the vessel is attractive, safe, clean and secure.Conduct periodic drills and routine inspections of the vessel and equipment.Enforce safety regulations and procedures for passengers and crew.Participate in USCG required training drills to maintain a high state of readiness to respond to fire, man overboard, collision, grounding, flooding, abandon ship, medical incidents and other emergencies.Communication And ReportingCommunicate effectively with crew members, managers, other departments and other vessels.Maintain accurate logs and records of vessel operations, maintenance and incidents (maintain vessel's logbook and submit cruise reports daily).Report any accidents, incidents, or safety concerns to the appropriate authorities.Regularly report equipment problems, personnel issues, unusual situations and passenger complaints/suggestions to the supervisor.Maintenance And UpkeepPerform routine maintenance and minor repairs on the vessel both on and off season.Proactively identify and address potential maintenance needs to prevent operational disruptions.Oversee and assist with major repairs and dry docking as needed.Troubleshoot and resolve vessel maintenance issues as needed.Narration And Guest EngagementDeliver narrations during cruises, providing interesting and informative commentary on points of interest, local history, river facts and other relevant topics.Engage with passengers, answer questions and ensure a positive and memorable experience.OtherComplete other necessary tasks and duties as assigned. Wear the proper, clean and presentable uniform and be well groomed at all times.RequirementsMust be at least 19 years of age or older.Must pass DOT Physical, Essential Functions Test, and alcohol/drug screening at hire (subject to other testing as required in the agency D&A policy).Must pass basic background check at hire.Certified in First Aid and CPR.Must have Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card at hire.Valid U.S. Coast Guard License (Master of 100 tons) with appropriate endorsements.Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, which includes some holidays, nights and weekends..Knowledge Skills And AbilitiesInterpersonal Skills: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to handle sensitive employee relations matters with professionalism and discretion.Customer Service: Extensive customer service skills, ensuring a positive and enjoyable experience for all passengers.Initiative: Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Industry Knowledge: A strong understanding of the technical and operational aspects of all riverboat positions essential for effective leadership and supervision.Knowledge of Vessel Maintenance: Strong understanding of vessel maintenance requirements and ability to troubleshoot, perform or oversee tasks to ensure the safe upkeep of the vessel.Judgement and Decision-Making: Ability to problem-solve and make decisions quickly and effectively in emergency situations.Communication Skills: Excellent public speaking and communication skills to deliver engaging narrations and interact with passengers.Navigation and Vessel Operation: Demonstrated ability to safely navigate a vessel in congested waters and challenging conditions, along with strong organizational skills and the ability to comprehend technical manuals and Coast Guard regulations.Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for extended periods, up to 6 hours per day. Ability to routinely bend, stretch, crawl, climb, kneel, and lift heavy objects (over 50 pounds). Ability to quickly climb ladders and stairs. Ability to go into confined spaces.
