Title: Mechanical Design Engineer I / II (EIT) Location: Columbus, Ohio Type: Direct Hire Industry: Mission-Critical Infrastructure | HVAC & Mechanical Systems Design Compensation: $80k-$90k Company Overview Our client is an engineering consulting firm specializing in the design and delivery of mission-critical infrastructure systems. Their work supports facilities where uptime is essential, including data centers, telecommunications infrastructure, and other high-reliability environments. The team provides mechanical and electrical design services for systems such as cooling plants, HVAC systems, power infrastructure, and environmental control systems, working directly with facility owners and operators. Position Summary The Mechanical Design Engineer (Level I / II) supports the design and development of mechanical systems for mission-critical facilities. This role is focused on HVAC system design, equipment layout, and construction document development, working under the guidance of senior engineers. This is a hands-on, design-oriented role where the engineer will contribute to system layouts, calculations, and coordination efforts across multiple projects. The position offers exposure to real-world infrastructure projects and collaboration with clients, contractors, and internal engineering teams. ResponsibilitiesAssist in the design of HVAC and mechanical systems for commercial, industrial, and mission-critical facilitiesDevelop system layouts including ductwork, piping, and equipment placementSupport the design of systems such as:Chilled water systemsAir handling units (AHUs)CRAC / CRAH units (data center environments)Pumps and cooling towersPerform basic engineering calculations including:Heat gain / heat lossAirflow and ventilation requirementsEquipment sizing supportPrepare and modify construction drawings using AutoCAD and/or RevitCoordinate mechanical systems with electrical, architectural, and structural disciplinesAssist in reviewing shop drawings and submittalsSupport construction-phase activities including field coordination and site visitsParticipate in project meetings and internal design reviewsMaintain documentation and support development of project deliverablesQualificationsBachelor's Degree in Mechanical EngineeringEIT (Engineer-in-Training) certification preferred or in progress1 5+ years of experience in mechanical design, HVAC, or building systemsExperience with:HVAC system layoutsMechanical piping and duct routingEquipment selection supportFamiliarity with industry standards such as ASHRAE, NFPA, and building codesProficiency with:AutoCAD and/or RevitMicrosoft Office (Excel, Word)Technical SkillsUnderstanding of HVAC systems and mechanical design fundamentalsExposure to:Chilled water systemsAir distribution systemsPumps, valves, and mechanical equipmentBasic knowledge of building automation systems (Client) such as Trane Tracer or similar platformsAbility to interpret engineering drawings and specificationsUnderstanding of construction documentation and design workflowsPreferred (Not Required)Exposure to mission-critical environments such as:Data centersTelecommunications facilitiesLabs or cleanroomsInternship or work experience in consulting engineering or mechanical contractingFamiliarity with load calculation tools (Trane Trace, Carrier HAP, etc.)Core CompetenciesStrong attention to detail and willingness to learnAbility to work in a collaborative team environmentGood communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholdersAbility to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlinesInterest in developing toward a Professional Engineer (PE) license
