Certified Sterile Instrument Tech

Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent.Certified Registered Central Service Technician through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) through Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD).Preferred QualificationsGraduate of a vocational or college Central Sterile Processing program.One (1) year of sterile processing experience.Core Duties and ResponsibilitiesResponsible for printing, verifying and assembling the perioperative surgical schedule daily.Coordinate perioperative room instrument and equipment needs utilizing perioperative surgical schedule as directed in collaboration with the department supervisor and/or OR leadership team.Coordinate suitable substitutes for specific instrumentation.Coordinate room needs based on specific physician needs.Guide and assist Central Sterile and OR technicians in performing daily activities.Maintain sterilization records daily.Inspect, assemble and sterilize all surgical and house instrumentation used throughout WVU Medicine according to departmental policy and procedure.Accurately restock case carts with supplies, instrumentation and equipment as indicated by surgeon preference cards.Accurately restock surgical services and specialty carts and top tracks.Stage and deliver case carts, stocking carts and equipment via clean cart lift, or services elevator as needed.Inventory and maintain adequate levels of all instrumentation and sterile supplies utilized throughout University Healthcare.Receive returned items and record and return them to inventory.Respond to instrument and equipment requests from physicians.Serve as initial contact for physicians and perioperative staff to coordinate solutions to instrumentation problems.Report missing or damaged instrumentation/equipment per policy and procedure.Serve as initial contact for departmental inquiries from customers.Assist in the training and development of new employees.Assist other Central Sterile Instrument Technicians with daily assignments.Physical RequirementsMeet Department of Labor's Medium duty standard (medium work—exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly).Bend, stoop, reach and be capable of normal rotation, standing and walking for an 8-12 hour shift.Lift up to 60 pounds and push loaded carts weighing in excess of 200 pounds.Working EnvironmentPhysical working environment may include, but not limited to, any of the following hazards: high pressure steam, chemicals, electrical, mechanical, bio-waste, stress, back strain, body fluids, etc.Environmental conditions may include, but not be limited to, variations in temperature, noise, odors, multi-stimuli, etc.Will be working in PPE for extended periods of time.Skills & AbilitiesUse a computer keyboard, monitor and mouse.Answer telephones and transcribe messages.Communicate verbally, written, and electronically with healthcare personnel, families and patients.Additional Job InformationScheduled weekly hours: 40.Exempt/Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt.Equal Opportunity EmployerWest Virginia University Health System and its subsidiaries (collectively "WVUHS") is an equal opportunity employer and complies with all applicable federal, state, and local fair employment practices laws.
